http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory?id=1505255 In most places, a politician has to kiss babies in order to succeed. Arkansas politicians have to eat raccoon. The small east Arkansas town of Gillett doubles its population on the second weekend of every year as candidates and political junkies gather for its annual Coon Supper. More than 60 years old, the event has become a required stop for anyone seeking or holding political office in Arkansas. Originally started as a fundraiser for high school athletics, it's now the ultimate meet-and-greet for the state's politicians. "If anybody wants to be in the political scene in Arkansas, it's a must to attend the Coon Supper," said Phil English, the master of ceremonies. -- Bill Clinton had to eat raccoon in order to become a major player in Arkansa politics. Seems kind of fitting with the way that most elections have become almost reality TV spectacles in their own right. Soon the merger of "Fear Factor" and the US political election system will be complete!

QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Jan 14, 2006 -> 04:13 PM) Wait a minute, I thought Bush's victory with both the popular AND electoral vote wasn't a mandate. Is it only a mandate when the leftist candidate wins? It wouldn't have been a mandate either way because half the voting age population doesn't f***ing vote in the damn first place.

After making the few calls to notify certain people and the such, I figured I'd share this with everybody here. A few months ago, I wrote a piece for this book project called "The Cost of Freedom" from Howling Dog Press. (www.howlingdogpress.com) After not hearing back from them for a while, I figured that it was just a lark -- fun to try. Anyway, I'm checking my e-mail tonight and my piece was accepted by the editors putting the book together (It is going to be a bunch of articles written by different people about civil liberties, the wars and the affects on freedom in the post-9/11 world) I'm still in complete shock right now about it. Just wow.

Man Given Ticket for Pro-Pot Sticker

http://www.officer.com/article/article.jsp...tion=5&id=28023 A pro-pot group alleges that an Aurora, Colorado police officer pulled over one of its members this week because he had a marijuana legalization sticker on the back of his vehicle. Safer Alternative for Enjoyable Recreation, or SAFER - which persuaded Denver voters to legalize adult possession of a small amount of marijuana - alleges the officer told Paul Wansing he was "offended" by the sticker and cited the 25- year-old chef for having a cracked windshield and an air freshener dangling from his rearview mirror. The officer, who wasn't identified, allegedly told Wansing that he wouldn't have been cited if he didn't have the sticker on his vehicle and that he didn't want his children to see such "trash." -- So, let's just stomp all over the Constitution, officer? What a thug. As Hunter Thompson once quipped: "We cannot expect people to have respect for law and order until we teach respect to those we have entrusted to enforce those laws." And is not the drug war getting so insane that people are getting pulled over and harassed because of stickers on their car?

http://www.tennessean.com/apps/pbcs.dll/ar...S0201/601130394 Ford won her seat over a GOP opponent by 13 votes, and irregularities such as dead people voting have been uncovered. Republican leaders said they may call for a vote next week to nullify the election of the Memphis Democrat. Attorney General Paul Summers' office said the Senate could to that with a majority, which is 17 votes. Williams said yesterday, however, that as chairman of a Senate panel looking into the election, he wants to wait until the state election office finishes reviewing ballots. Ford said she's not paying attention to Republicans, especially because they don't have enough votes. "I'm sure all my colleagues will do their best," Ford said. "I'll be ready for whatever that is." She replaced her brother, John Ford, who stepped down last year from the Senate seat after he was indicted on federal charges that he took $55,000 in bribes. -- What a great family. And might I just say -- Hey Tennessee, try to come up with your own original way to steal elections. Chicago's got the copyright on the dead voting. Or perhaps this is a bizarro Chicago where corpses cast votes for Republican candidates?

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Jan 12, 2006 -> 10:50 PM) Again, the quakers reference. dammit... i never really did get to study that and I don't want to hunt for it, or is that in the GWB admits to wiretapping thread. http://www.democracynow.org/article.pl?sid=05/12/15/155223 From the Sun Sentinel in Florida: South Florida's anti-war activists are few in number. Many are retirees, veterans or students. They carry puppets, wave placards or hand out pamphlets to potential military recruits. But these activities have been labeled a "threat" by the Defense Department. Local peace-mongers, like many around the country, have come under surveillance by the Pentagon. "I'm disabled, I'm 59 and if I'm a credible threat to the government of the United States, then either the government is terribly paranoid or terribly weak," said Rich Hersh of Boca Raton, whose group, the Truth Project, has come under federal scrutiny. The military's domestic surveillance was disclosed this week in a report on NBC Nightly News, which obtained a 400-page Department of Defense document outlining the surveillance of peace groups. Acting on a complaint from the Truth Project, Florida Sen. Bill Nelson posted a letter Wednesday to Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, demanding an accounting. -- Many in the group are Quakers and they even meet at the Quaker House. http://www.afsc.org/news/2005/government-spying.htm -- The Quakers commenting on it themselves. Historical note as well, the Quakers were among many groups in the 1960s and 1970s that were targeted by the FBI/COINTELPRO where they were infiltrated with agent sabateurs and other tactics to try to "neutralize" their supposed threat.

QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Jan 12, 2006 -> 09:34 PM) Isn't that the group started by that crazy ass rev. whatshisface? The guy whose whole family is basically married to one another? Ding Ding Ding! It is "Rev." Fred Phelps. One of the good things Michael Moore actually did was counter-protest a few of his gay bashing fests. Could always do what they did -- have a bunch of gay/lesbians talk to them. They really start running away like scalded dogs or you could use this (http://kevincassell.com/PERSON/POLITICS/left/sodom.htm) to show them that there is an alternate description of the meaning of Gen 19. Or use http://www.gotquestions.org/God-hates-f**s.html Or use the Southern Poverty Law Center (they're the ones that sued the KKK and pretty much took them out as a result of them lynching a black guy) for some info. Just a few ideas off the top of my head. Or you all could just not do a damn thing and not give them the f***ing time of day. 8 waterheads with stupid ass signs in front of a school with nobody there paying attention would be pretty f***ing funny.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/4602186.stm Mr Hartuv said his government was furious with Mr Robertson's remarks. "We were due to sign a contract in the near future with Mr Roberson for the construction of a new Christian heritage centre in the Galilee," he told the AFP news agency. "We, as the State of Israel, cannot accept what he said and we will not do any business with him or with anyone else who agrees with his view." But Mr Hartuv insisted Israel had not rejected outright the idea of building the centre. "The contract is still open - just not with Mr Robertson." --- Good. Serves the bastard right. Maybe he'll think before he opens up his yap again.

QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Jan 12, 2006 -> 10:08 AM) You ain't seen nothing yet. Wait till' you get to college, kid. It seems each and every college professor is an ultra-liberal and they simply relish every opportunity to throw their left-wing agenda in your face. I really don't care if you are a liberal or not; diversity is what makes a college campus so great. But, if you are a paid professional, don't you f***ing dare preach to me. It's low. It's classless. And, I think they end up turning more students off then they do "rally for the cause." You are a professor paid to teach students on a given subject. You are not paid to soapbox your political beliefs. I see you've taken one of Fred Gottheil's classes. God is that guy a douche.

Once again...Harry Belafonte opens big mouth
LowerCaseRepublican replied to juddling's topic in The Filibuster
QUOTE(juddling @ Jan 9, 2006 -> 12:49 AM) Belafonte Calls Bush 'Greatest Terrorist' By IAN JAMES, Associated Press Writer 3 hours ago CARACAS, Venezuela - The American singer and activist Harry Belafonte called President Bush "the greatest terrorist in the world" on Sunday and said millions of Americans support the socialist revolution of Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez. Belafonte led a delegation of Americans including the actor Danny Glover and the Princeton University scholar Cornel West that met the Venezuelan president for more than six hours late Saturday. Some in the group attended Chavez's television and radio broadcast Sunday. "No matter what the greatest tyrant in the world, the greatest terrorist in the world, George W. Bush says, we're here to tell you: Not hundreds, not thousands, but millions of the American people ... support your revolution," Belafonte told Chavez during the broadcast. The 78-year-old Belafonte, famous for his calypso-inspired music, including the "Day-O" song, was a close collaborator of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and is now a UNICEF goodwill ambassador. He also has been outspoken in criticizing the U.S. embargo of Cuba. Chavez said he believes deeply in the struggle for justice by blacks, both in the U.S. and Venezuela. "Although we may not believe it, there continues to be great discrimination here against black people," Chavez said, urging his government to redouble its efforts to prevent discrimination. Belafonte accused U.S. news media of falsely painting Chavez as a "dictator," when in fact, he said, there is democracy and citizens are "optimistic about their future." Dolores Huerta, a pioneer of the United Farm Workers labor union also in the delegation, called the visit a "very deep experience." Chavez accuses Bush of trying to overthrow him, pointing to intelligence documents released by the U.S. indicating that the CIA knew beforehand that dissident officers planned a short-lived 2002 coup. The U.S. denies involvement, but Chavez says Venezuela must be on guard. Belafonte suggested setting up a youth exchange for Venezuelans and Americans. He finished by shouting in Spanish: "Viva la revolucion!" Maybe it's just me but i don't see 'millions' of Americans giving a rat's ass about what's happening in Venezuela. Once again...stars comparing the Prez to terrorists. :headshake :headshake :headshake As Augustine said "Because I do it with one small ship, I am called a terrorist. You do it with a whole fleet and are called an emperor." (from his text City of God) I'm not defending Belefonte's statements but don't discount the concept of state terrorism. -

Did anyone get around to answering my original question -- that being if a person/family had a pre-Katrina mortgage on the house, would they still have to pay if the house was demolished? If that's so then they have somewhat of a right to be pissed -- cuz they have to dole out for that plus start all the Hell over again. Might be why some people are bending over backwards to defend their houses.

Since I really don't know where to go to get a really good briefcase/atache, I thought I'd ask Soxtalkers if they knew of any major chain stores that carry them and where my best bet would be to find a quality one. Since I'm student teaching, I need something to keep my files/homework assignments/etc. in when I go to school every day. Any assistance would kick ass.

Anybody correct me if I am wrong but if some residents are still paying for their homes (i.e. had a mortgage or whatever before Katrina), would they still have to pay if the house was razed?

Per CNN: Bleeding in Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's brain has been stopped and scans show improvement Friday after a third round of surgery to treat a major stroke, a hospital official said. The 77-year-old leader remained in critical condition, according to Dr. Shlomo Mor-Yosef, director general of Jerusalem's Hadassah Hospital. The third surgery lasted more than four hours. "The intracranial pressure was reduced," Mor-Yosef said. "Some of the clots were drained from the previous operation. At the conclusion of the operation there was no active hemorrhaging and the intracranial hemorrhaging has been eliminated and the pressure has gone back to normal." (Watch as doctors fight to save Sharon 1:58) A brain scan following the procedure showed "significant improvement in the appearance of the scan as interpreted by the neurologists and experts in neurosurgery and imaging," he said. After being hospitalized for the stroke on Wednesday night, Sharon has been in a medically induced coma, breathing with the aid of a respirator. Although doctors are saying that it would pretty much near impossible for him to keep up a public role like he has if he even recovers.
