Rule 5 roster deadline

Featured Replies

In order for a player to be protected in the Rule 5 draft, they have to be added to a team's 40 man roster by Friday.

Two Questions for those of you that know better than I do:

1) What happens to moves after Friday? i.e. if a guy is on the 40 man by Friday, can he be moved back off before the draft without losing protection?

2) Is it possible that the Friday deadline is holding up potential Sox (or other team) moves? If we were to complete a trade and begin accumulating prospects before Friday, I assume some may need to be protected, correct?

No.

It's possible. Depends on the time served for the prospects we would get. Just part of the equation.

Sox prospects in danger of being lost per MLB.com:

Chicago White Sox (6)

6. Adam Engel, OF

10. Jordan Guerrero, LHP

12. Jacob May, OF

14. Courtney Hawkins, OF

25. Luis Martinez, RHP

27. Nick Delmonico, 1B/OF

Sox have the 40-Man set at 38, so you have to figure two of those guys will be added before Friday.

I don't have the 40 man in front of me, but are there any good candidates to dfa?

Interesting. You'd think they would want to protect more than two of those guys.

If we're rebuilding, I'd make sure to protect Engel, May, Guerrero, & Delmonico.

Even if they weren't rebuilding, they'd need to protect those guys.

See the pinned article and thread on this. Also I am pretty sure Martinez is not eligible, but even if he was, he's so far from MLB that no team would take him.

I would do Engel, May, and Guerrero. Delmonico, if some team wants to keep him around all season, good for them. I don't think he is much of a game changer.

I doubt he lasts a full season with an MLB team if drafted.

that list isn't right unless the rules have changed:

In order for a player to be eligible for the Rule 5 Draft, they must (A) not be on the team’s 40-man roster and (B) they must have signed at age 18 or 19 and spent 5 or 4 years respectively in the organization (essentially, they must be 22 years old and not protected).
