Sox to cut payroll

Featured Replies

That's what Tracy Ringolsby, the national baseball writer for the Rocky Mountain News, reports in the latest issue of Baseball America. He sez the $15 million cut has been ordered by Reinsdorf.

Of course, he also reports that a number of other clubs have been ordered to cut payroll, too.

Um, so that would leave us with a payroll of about $40 million. Theres no way that is true unless they are counting on Colon not resigning.

Is there a link to this story? Just Monday KW said a slight increase...

But Kenny Williams said that he would ADD payroll...hmmm

It's in the print edition of Baseball America, should be able to find it on a local newsstand.

It is subscriber only

If its true, then KW isn't the right man for the gm job and I don't know who is...well I do know ;)

This would be a horrible move by JR. Right when fans are coming back you stab them in the back. I'll take the wait and see approach though.

I believe both may be correct. By trying to cut $15 million he may wind up with only a slight increase.

Or the theory I like is:

Perhaps the $15 million is a couple/few players who will not be back. Cut $15M in those salaries and add $20 in new players.

I'm too old to worry about speculation. It won't do any good.

LOGIC HAS NO PLACE ON THESE BOARDS! :bang :bang :bang

Bye bye Maggs

You don't authorize your GM to go out and ADD players during the season only to turn around and cut $15M in payroll. We might even have less to work with then the Expos. I don't put much credence in these stories. After all look at the timing of this report-only 4 days or so after the end of the regular season. You wonder if there have even been any front office meetings yet.

This column was written before last weekend, I'm certain.

And it's just one paragraph in a rundown of many, many teams. And most are planning to CUT, not add, payroll.

probably part of a owners' strategy to roll back payroll -- or at least try to.

Highest attendance in years and KW and JR lie as usual..what's new

Well, I don't, and you don't, but Reinsdorf do.

Sorry, I'll stop.

All I gotta say is it had better not be true. If it is, the team will go from the decent attendance of this year to a record-low season attendance overnight.

I think you're misunderstanding this quote. The SOX payroll as it stands right now is at 69MIL. I know that's not what JR actually paid, but that's what's on the books right now for 2004. Until Everett & Alomar become FA's they are still considered SOX property.

So if you lop off 15MIL from 69MIL you're looking at 54MIL which is what all of us have been saying so far. Logic does have a place on these boards. ;)

As I said before, JR has no justification for a payroll < 2001.

The SOX finished with 1,939,524 in attendance.

That's nearly identical to 2000 & a 300K increase from 2002. About a 17% increase from 2002. There's no justification to lowering the payroll below the 55MIL mark.

Pat Gillick.

Well I was giving my own vote of confidence :D

Gillick should be hired by someone...he's an exceptional gm.

What I really like about Gillick is he has standards he won't compromise

he got out of Balty when he saw what direction management was taking that club

and now that Seattle management has failed to spend down the stretch for two straight seasons, he knows the run is over there.

That club is ready to plunge. Cameron, McLemore and Rhodes are all free agents. Edgar might retire. They can't wait to get Garcia outta town.

That's a place that led the AL in attendance and they're awfully conservative with their spending.

Which means he isn't going to be interested in being the GM of a team that is a readheaded step child. He is going to want to go somewhere he can win. Heck if the Yankees don't win it all, I could see him landing there.

If that's true and JR is gonna cut payroll than I'm gonna consider real profiundly not to go overboard rooting for this team until EL CHEAPO sells it. Reinsdork isn't serious about winning a Ring.. Or maybe he is and thinks that with scrubs and a 40 Million dollar pay roll it can get done.. :nono

REINSDORK :fyou

not sure Gillick has the personality to work with Steinbrenner.

But Cashman will be a goner -- especially if the Yankees lose to the Contraction Twins.

The Yankees may be the real big story in waiting. If they lose to the Twins or even in the next round and not make the World Series you might see a lot of changes in the Big Apple.
