I will assume they sign and put the picks in to start and then take away and move the White Sox 2nd rounder up as guys off the the board. Not necessarily true. The Rockies technically give up their 3rd pick. If Holland re-signs with them (highly unlikely) they'd forfeit their actual 2nd rounder which doesn't move Sox up at all.

This could also be a reason as to why they would rather have Darvish instead of Arrieta. Recover at least something by letthing him walk and not having to give up anything to sign Darvish as opposed to Cobb and Lynn.

Exactly. If they sign Darvish, they will have their 1st rounder, 2nd rounder and two additional picks after round $2. That probably gets them close to an additional $3 million to spend on the draft. It's not a huge deal when you are trying to championships but it doesn't hurt. They need to reload that system a bit.

Teams like Sox and Phillies are really at a disadvantage. Philly had to forfeit the 3rd selection in the 2nd round to sign Santana and the 3rd selection in the 3rd round to sign Arrieta. The Twins and Brewers gave up their 3rd rounders for Lynn and Cain but still have their 1st, 2nd, and a competitive balance selection. It's insane
