Yeah you're right. They should have just turned it into an unofficial sequel to that franchise with completely different characters and backstory.

    1. According to an article I read after the movie, it seems like it was premidated to start the events. 2. I think Charlie was possessed by the demon that the cult worships (explaining why she is

Hotel Artemis was a very.ambitious film...didnt quite get there, but it's definitely worth checking out.  Jodie Foster is always good, this was a strange role for her to wait five years in between fil

I Tonya was a lot better than I was expecting. It had a bit of everything, times you wouldn't feel sorry for her. Times when you think most of her problems weren't her fault, and a lot of laughs.

Really like Molly’s Game. Will be rewatchable on cable

Bright was good.

It has potential, but I didn't see the need to use the F word in every other sentence.

I'm not a prude, but it seemed really out of place.

FINALLY seeing Star Wars tonight.

Shape of Water was very good, but I’m not convinced that film or Lady Bird (prefer Edge of Seventeen, actually) is the best film of the year.

Oldman should definitely pick up the win for The Darkest Hour.

Three Billboards is the front runner, IMO.

Finally got around to watching the Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito documentary on Netflix. A must watch for any hip hop fan.

I, Tonya was ok. I like how it was done like a feaux documentary in some ways. It’s really made to make Harding look like a sympathetic figure.

All the Money in the World was good, not great. I would give Molly's World good because as a heterosexual male Jessica Chastain is nice to look at for 2 hours, but thought in reality it was only slightly above average.

This moviepass thing is awesome.

Co-sign. The theaters are also letting me use my rewards card so I am getting points and free stuff like drinks and popcorn without spending anything outside the $10 a month.

I keep waiting for them to be like, No more rewards if you use MoviePass.

Three Billboards was really really good. Not sure how I feel about the ending, but the rest of the movie was great.

The movie theaters aren't losing money. My buddy said the CEO was on some talk show recently talking about it. He's trying to get sponsorship. Everytime someone uses Moviepass, he loses money.

Also, you didn't pay for the $90 annual use when the deal was out there, coming out to like $7.50?

I did the annual Black Friday deal. Just said $10 because I don’t think the annual option is available anymore.

I think The Post just might win the Oscar ... not ordinarily, but because of the current political climate.

If you are or know someone who is a Costco member, it is on their site.

Watched The Nice Guys over the weekend. Highly entertaining.

Lady Bird was not as billed, I am not sure if I posted that before. Average to above average.

Molly's Game isn't a GREAT film, but it has great performances from both Jessica Chastain (surprised her outfits throughtout the movie haven't come under more scrutiny in the current environment) and Idris Elba. Costner was his usual solid self in a supporting role, which has become his late career niche.

Aaron Sorkin definitely is worthy of yet another screenwriting nomination for the upcoming Oscars.

I thought it was quite good, but I thought spotlight was much better.

Yep.

The problem is that there's no real clear winner. Last year, movies like Lion or Hidden Figures were much better (IMO) than 3 Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, Lady Bird, etc. Brooklyn was much better than Lady Bird, for that matter, or The Edge of Seventeen, which almost nobody saw.

Molly's Game is similar to The Post, in that Chastain and Streep are getting a ton of hype...Bob Odenkirk deserves it for his supporting role.

Get Out, to me, just isn't Best Picture material...I can't remember the last time a horror film made it.

Coco...animated movies have never done well, other than Beauty & the Beast back almost 25 years ago.

Fwiw, here's a site's betting odds with favorites in order:

3 Billboards

The Shape of Water (not quite good enough, but surely a unique film)

Dunkirk (not enough dominant acting performances to carry it to best film)

Get Out (loses because of genre and amount of time since most have seen it)

The Post

Call Me By Your Name (a film about a gay couple might not be seen by enough, although look at The Artist)

The Florida Project (not enough have seen it)

Molly's Game

The Greatest Showman (no interest in seeing this one)

The Darkest Hour (great Oldman performance, but not a great film again...very good)

The Disaster Artist (momentum moving away from James Franco/Tommy Wiseau)

I, Tonya (great work by Janney/Robbie)

Kings

Mudbound (I would actually put this solidly in the Top 10, but almost nobody has seen it)

Doubt it will happen, but would like to see Baby Driver (but Spacey) up there

Yahoo picks for Oscar nominations...forgot about The Big Sick earlier

Predictions:

The Big Sick

Call Me by Your Name

Dunkirk

The Florida Project

Get Out

Lady Bird

Mudbound

The Post

The Shape of Water

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

Other contenders:

Darkest Hour

I, Tonya

Molly’s Game

Wonder Woman

Longshots:

Blade Runner 2049

Coco

The Disaster Artist

Logan

Phantom Thread

War for the Planet of the Apes

The Post was good, but not great. I appreciated it but I think it’ll be forgotten in long run.

I think the SAG awards are a pretty good indication on what we'll see at Oscars. Oldman, McDormand look to be leaders for leading categories.

Looks like the shake up in voters paid off. Lady Bird and Get Out getting mass recognition. Even Logan.

Gonna have to check out Shape of Water this weekend.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hostiles is worth checking out...

Professor Marston & the Wonder Women makes you completely look at the comic hero in a totally new way.
