KATOH doesn't particularly like our prospects

The reasoning (in comments):

Not a good corner OFer who doesn't walk much and strikes out too much.

His k rate isn't particularly high (19.5%).

Anyway, it's nothing to get too mad about. Not shocked that it likes hansen / kopech so much.

How is Brendan Rodgers left off this list? Dude rakes.

KATOH is WAY too stat heavy.

In fact it is 100% statistical. This is why I have never given it much consideration, as using stats alone to evaluate minor leagues just does not get you anything of value. As part of the picture, sure, stats can be used. But to lean totally on them is asking to be very wrong, very often.

Eventually it will become KATOH+ which is more interesting. The prospect team wasn't finished with all of their players yet, however.

About all I like out of it is to see guys I hadn't really noticed before.

I think that's the point of it though, Mitchell regularly writes articles about prospects that are often overlooked but that the stats say might be worth something. Every season KATOH correctly finds several of these guys and that's why I enjoy it.

If it is 100% statistical, how is Eloy so low?

His stats were quite good, some might even say the bessss

He doesn't walk that much, he isn't a low strikeout guy, and you'll notice that many of the players on the list are CF'ers, Catchers and SS. He gets docked for defense a lot in these WAR stuff.

He said he's a young guy with a lot of power and that's it. But I bet in KATOH+ he'll do much better because he has a pretty good hit tool grade from longenhagen.

For all the talk about the Sox changing their draft philosophy, it's interesting that the top prospects they've acquired via trade have been players with better tools profiles rather than statistical ones.

Also, Eloy didn't have great numbers with the Cubs' A ball team so stat wise it makes sense.

That's all I get out of it as well. I like to see who had great statistical years, but aren't considered top prospects. Everything else, any names I recognize, I ignore.

They also still have many low minors players. Katoh will take some time before it believes in it, AA and AAA success is weighed more heavily. Some of the guys will rise, especially eloy who has only played a few games at AA ball so far.

That is why they got him.if you trade sale or Q you get performance and tools but many of the other guys were high tools guys with performance issues that they bought low on. They could have also gotten undertooled high performers but they chose to go for the potential. The system already was very good so they can take some high variance guys with upside.

Eloy played all of 2017 at age 20, so he still has time to work on drawing more walks. The talent is there to be a beast at the plate.

I see my man Jake Rogers, who was the best defensive catcher in the 2016 draft, checks in at a gaudy #17.

The "jury is still out" on the Sox new and improved drafting. They are drafting college hitters - hopefully the evaluation has gotten a lot better.
