Imagine all the quants out there who will be 1) getting involved in the industry whereas before they might have only looked at Wall Street, 2) the resurrection of daily fantasy sports (again), and 3) the competition between MLB teams and capitalistic "niche exploiters" looking to profit...

Meanwhile, baseball viewing/ratings should increase dramatically with this new avenue to growing the game.

Young people, in particular, with a love of statistics/analysis will be drawn to it because of the extreme amount of data baseball generates compared to all the other major sports.

Industry experts are unanimous in their predictions. Higher revenue. Higher television ratings. Higher engagement with fans. Higher advertising and sponsorship deals.

Higher everything.

Now? The league (NFL) has money to make and so much of it that whatever remains of the protests against the league is likely to fade or be completely meaningless. Sorting out this gambling thing is about all these billionaires are going to care about.

I had no idea that you couldn't bet on sports in America , its been going on in the UK for quite a while.

In 1919 it is alleged that several members of the White Sox took bribes from gamblers to throw the 1919 World Series, so that gamblers could bet on the winning team. They were nicknamed the "Black Sox" after this, and the players in question were banned from baseball.

Caulfield's posting style usually involves listing everything remotely relevant, or not, on a subject. There was probably very little influence of a 1919 team on politics in the early 1990s when the most recent version of the casino legislation was passed. Pete Rose would have been a more recent memory, but if you go back to statements from 1991 what really drove it was a combination of lobbying from the major sports leagues who were trying to protect their business model from competition and religious opposition to gambling, which is still strong enough to prevent some states from opting in.

Nice to know , however you've spoilt the movie  , unless Hollywood gloss it up and there is a firing squad scene

Watched it yesterday , very depressing and sad state of affairs , I didn't enjoy the film ,  it hurt .

Also might interest you to know that Ken Berry who was a White Sox CF and my favorite player as a very young man has a bit part in EMO . His IMDb profile says "heckler" but I can't remember if that is accurate. Guess I might have to rewatch it since I have it in my DVD library.

I did a huge report on this while in college. The movie is great, but it doesn't tell half of it. You need to get the book by Eliot Asinof.
