On the broadcast of the World Series tonight on ESPN Radio, both Stark and Campbell were asked who they believed would be the next White Sox manager.

 

Stark said that while KW is not giving out any info as to who it may be, he feels that Cito Gaston is the guy KW likes the most. Campbell went further and said that he knows KW loves Cito because he played for him. Both seemed to agree that the choice for Sox manager would be Gaston.

 

Take that for what it's worth, which could be a lot or very little.

The more I hear about Cito Gaston, the more I like him.

I am still worried he is too much like JM but I then remember... back to back world series titles.

let's remember one thing:

 

Cito Gaston has done solid work -- but it's more important to get excited about the makeup of the team Kenny Williams gives him.

 

Gaston with Colon has a chance to be a lot better manager than Gaston without Colon.

 

I also heard the Stark and Campbell comments. One thing Campbell also said was: don't forget that Reinsdorf will have some input in the decision.

Much is being made of Cito Gaston's demeanor being too similar to Jerry Manuel's. I think this misses the point of why Jerry wasn't successful. It wasn't his laid back attitude that cost the Sox, it was his poor choices. Hopefully Cito has a better understanding of strategy.

Just because someone is "laid back" does not mean he wouldn't have a firm, no nonsense approach. JM couldn't seem to get his players to do what was necessary to win, couldn't get them to play team first baseball. Cito has already proven that he can do just that.

I am holding nothing against Cito and would very much like to have him as a manager. But, remember he had a few good players on his team too. Paul Molitor, John Olerud, Robby Alomar(the young version), David Cone in his prime, Dave Winfield, Joe Carter, Dave Stewart and had Rickey Henderson for a while too. I am not saying he can't get it done but he did have a little talent on his teams in Toronto.

Tuesday afternoon Bruce Levine was on the MacNeil show, and said "his sources" indicate that it will be Cito also. He said that Cito's salary would be around 1.5 million a year, and his contract would be for 2 years plus an option.

FWIW, Teddy Greenstein said a scout told him Cito made JM look like Sam Kinison. I agree with the above post though, it was not JM being laid back that cost the Sox, it was his decision making.

I agree. I would love to get Ozzie back as 3B coach to be groomed as a successor to Gaston - if in fact his deal is only 2 years. If this is true then the Sox are looking to play for October in 2004 and 2005. Gaston has alluded to the fact that he would not like to manage a rebuilding process. Perhaps that is where Guillen comes in 2006.

 

But IIRC, doesn't Gaston have a desire to bring in his own staff? Or was he flexible on this?

There is no reason to believe sources like this who claim to know the inside dealings of a contract offer when people are still be interviewed. The figures may well be what the Sox are willing to offer any new manager and not Gaston specifically. I have nothing against Gaston other than the fact it would be a similar clubhouse. I think what this team needs is an aggressive and outgoing personality that would fire some players up or fire them, whichever is needed.

Seems like all the insiders are saying Gaston.

That's a good question, winningugly83 has been bringing that up for a while now in all of his posts about Gaston, but no one knows...

FWIW, I believe Gaston was the Blue Jays hitting coach in 2000, but as dismissed after the year along with their then 3B coach Terry Bevington. Just a cute little coincidence.

 

I also remember seeing things such as him nearly becoming manager of the Angels, but the numbers didn't come out right or something and that the Angels went with who they thought was the better man(I believe Mike Scoscia), and Cleveland I believe interviewed him too, but went with Charlie Manuel(another s***ty coach named Manuel). Also, he has held a front office job with Toronto in the past....in fact, I believe he did either this past year or in 2002.

 

So it's not like he's totally been away from coaching since 96 when he was fired, or whatever year that was.

 

All I have to say is that if you give him talent, he will get results. So we should give him talent and we got ourselves a hell of a good shot at winning.

Sounds like he doesn't want to manage unless the team and organization are serious about winning. Not sure why he would change his tune for the White Sox and why I feel the Sox are just putting this out there to be in a position to lowball Guillen. Then when they lose Colon and all attendance for next year, they are not paying a manager $1M to try and be successful.

A big no thanks to this trade purposal. Brown is 38, is injury prone(2003 was his 1st full season since 2000), and he is one of the few guys that is making MORE then Maggs, which would leave the Sox no money to address other needs. The only reason Maggs might be traded is to free up money, not to add an aging, injury prone pitcher that is making MORE. Bad idea.
