Interim 5th Starter?

Featured Replies

The "dallas sucks" crowd and the "dallas will hit his vesting option" seems to have too much overlap here. Like, both aren't gonna be true.

So sounds like Tony considered skipping the 5th starter’s spot, but wants to give the guys an extra day of rest.  As such, it seems like it has to be one of Banks, McClure, or Bilous as all three pitc

It could be. He sucked last year and got to 162.

It's highly unlikely. They will keep him under 160 one way or another. Unlike last year if he sucks he'll probably be out of the rotation after the deadline.

What would you set his highest ERA at to keep getting starts in the second half?

5?  5.25?

That’s still above average for a fifth starter…but essentially replacement level, let’s say on course for a sub 1 fWAR like 2020.

Even if he’s at 4.5 to 4.75ish, Hahn pretty much has to go out and add at least one more option in June/July…in order to cover Kopech.  But also to show legit options in the case of a Keuchel grievance to where the team has a legit argument that they had better choices for starts.

Of course, the last guy with conditions like this was Yonder Alonso.  Didn’t come close.

If he does that, the extra $18.5M he would get would only be a slightly bad contract rather than a really bad one.

I think it's $20M in 2023. But if he does fairly well this year and next yr. it would be considered a good contract but no one here expects that to happen.

I'd bet they use him as a headliner if it's that bad, maybe with Lopez. Or hell, the way Lopez is pitching maybe he's the 5th starter. Really there's too many variables here to predict much of anything other than come hell or high water the Sox aren't going to let him hit 160.
