Scouts loved Caglianone. Some in the room would’ve picked him. Chris Getz wanted Hagen Smith. Mike Shirley has a history with A&M coach. I don’t think Sox would pass on Laviolette at 10. I also don’t think he’ll be on the board.

The data geeks killed Cags.  They didn't like his cHaSe rAtE despite only having an 8% k rate.  There may or may not be (there is) a text group dedicated to videos of Cags hitting balls 1000 ft.  Just another one to file away for the next time they want to kill a really good hitter.

Story of two franchises...Witt Jr. and Caglianone vs. Vaughn and Smith.

Two playoff appearances for CWS since 2008 vs. two WS and beating the O's last year and likely headed to postseason 4 in 2025 with all that pitching and a franchise cornerstone not even leaving yet.

I can only presume that we would have taken Witt, given the opportunity.  Hagen Smith should be good - I doubt he flops.

Realistically in 2019, some suggested that we take Abrams...he or Riley Greene would have been helpful.  I just remember at the time that I absolutely did not want the Sox to take Bleday.
I still think Vaughn looks good at the plate.  Maybe we can trade .2 WAR Vaughn for -.1 WAR Baty.

He should go around that range and he'd be a great pick there.  It's a deep class of hitters.

Good draft to pick first in rounds 2-20.  Plenty of bats without reaching.

LaViolette is a very similar player to Bleday but Bleday didn't K as much and had better production.

Are you saying Chris Getz overruled his scouts?  Or what are you saying here?

I don’t know that he overruled anyone necessarily. He decided which player to take in his first draft as GM though. It’s pretty common.

I agree it’s common, and I’m fine with the Hagen pick, but I wish they’d stay out of it. I trust Shirley’s evaluations more than Getz’

Huge difference in Baty's future costs vs. Vaughn though.

Baty is 2B 3B, which is our deepest position organizationally. If he could actually play SS, sure, go for it.

Or he would be shifted to first...but Baty has not been a huge power and run producer up until this week.

Mock 3.0 today over at BA. Will post through the Sox.

https://www.baseballamerica.com/stories/2025-mlb-mock-draft-3-0-first-round-pick-predictions-for-every-team/

Quote

1.)  Nationals - Ethan Holliday

2.) Angels - Aiva Arquette

3.) Mariners - Seth Hernandez

4.) Rockies - Liam Doyle

5.) Cardinals - Jamie Arnold

6.) Pirates - Eli Willits

7.) Marlins - Kyson Witherspoon

8.) Blue Jays - Kade Anderson

9.) Reds - Jace LaViolette

10. White Sox — Billy Carlson, SS, Corona (Calif.) HS
Range: 6-10

The bulk of this wave of high school shortstops from 10-14 have a chance to go inside the first 10 picks, but more helium has gone towards the college pitchers in recent days. The college arms will have the advantage of pitching in high-profile matchups in postseason play, while the high school season is wrapping up around the country. Carlson doesn’t seem to be in the same Ethan Holliday/Eli Willits tier, but he’s not far off and boasts the best glove in the class.

I think the GM absolutely should make the pick, just like in the NFL, NBA, etc..  He obviously should have the scouting director and staff at his side, but the GM is the one who builds the roster.

Getz has moved on from a lot of people in the org., but he has kept Shirley.  Not sure if that's significant or not.

True but Getz will be blamed if the pick doesn’t work so I understand why he’d make the call.

Shirley is good at his job. He also drafted Chris Getz haha

Oof.  It would definitely be a hitter.  Maybe they could push a guy like Cannarella there. Or a guy like Mason Neville, Henry Ford or Quentin Young.  There should be some pretty good options.

Or they take a hitter first and try to push Bauer down?  I hope to start hearing some gossip regarding him in a few weeks.

Well one thing you can be sure of with Boras there will be no shortage of gossip.

I think it's gonna be really hard for them to push him down.  Two teams (Orioles and Rays) have 3 picks between the Sox 1st and 2nd rounders and a number of teams have 2 (Brewers, D'Backs, Dodgers, Red Sox, Tigers, Royals, Twins,). If they don't take him at 1-10 I don't think they're gonna get him.

It's a mock from my weird little brain so feel free to disregard.

Nah, it's interesting.  It's also a handy one-page view of the early draft board.  Lot of Shortstops.

Riley Quick Surging

It seems like that grouping of four college pitchers is at the top of many team boards—but who’s No. 5?

For many it will be UC Santa Barbara righthander Tyler Bremner, who entered the spring neck and neck with Arnold but has been a bit more inconsistent?

What about hulking, 6-foot-6, 245-pound righthander Riley Quick? He’s been a common name thrown around the industry in recent weeks and seems to be climbing boards. If he’s not solidly in the middle of the first round now, he could be soon.

Quick has a fastball that sits in the 96-97 mph range and is regularly up into the triple digits. For the first time in his career, he’s put together a solid package of innings as a full-time starter. His last three outings have been good ones—seven strikeouts vs. Missouri, nine strikeouts vs. Vanderbilt and seven strikeouts vs. Georgia—and his pure arm talent should rival most pitchers in the class.

Quick hasn’t shown the same strikeout upside that his peers in the class have—his strikeout rate sits at a solid 26.2% in his first 12 starts—but he has made nice strides in the control department.
