I doubt the grid structure of the ETFE roof is going to be nearly as unnoticeable as depicted in the renderings. Is that a B-2 bomber flying overhead?

They're not building a $3B dome for only the 10-12 Chiefs home games a year (half of which are probably being played in good outdoor weather). It's all about being able to utilize this kind of facility year round for things like mega-concerts (Taylor Swift, etc.), NCAA tournaments, and the one Super Bowl that the NFL will award to them for fleecing the taxpayers in such a grand fashion.

IMO, Sox should consider a retractable dome. Something like the ones in Seattle or Toronto. It make all the sense for fans and for the owners. The bad baseball weather days in Chicago seem to increase every year. It has gotten to the point where I will not even think about heading to a game where the forecast is questionable - i.e., hey, raining a bit now but there is a window to maybe get this one in. Then the cold and snow in late March early April, some uncomfortably hot weather or dodging summer rain storms. A retractable dome would be a bigger investment up front, but it would easily pay for itself.

From the early discussions, it does not appear that a dome will fit on the 78 or Amtrak sites.

We're not building a stadium with a focus on the skyline view and very short right field to be a retractable dome. The dome ain't gonna happen.

I still don't see how they get a park in that railroad yard. It's like Al Bundy trying to get a woman's size 8 foot in a size 4 shoe.

I think they will find a way to also grab part of the BNSF section to increase the site dimensions.

I’m hoping for one. Rain/winter conditions in the early season suuucks. And although lot of the existing retractable roof stadiums are kinda ugly, the benefits of having one would be unreal. No delayed/bad weather games ever again can only help convince people to show up.

This whole project is already super ambitious, but if Ishbia can crack the code on a beautiful stadium with a retractable roof and a skyline view, I think that would solidify the new stadium as an instant classic. It also helps that the technology/engineering surrounding ETFE roofs seems to only be getting better at providing natural light and great views, but we’ll see what happens.

KC already has a nice newer basketball facility.

Not sure enough of a population base for most of the mega concerts.

Also depends how far out in Johnson County or Wyandotte, where the KS Speedway and current major concert venue are located. Then there’s also Starlight and Midland theatres.

Interestingly, Seattle’s T-Mobile Park gets around the excess space that a retractable roof needs by positioning the roof above railroad tracks. However, the view of outside the stadium is limited because of that.

Now, please allow me to speculate:

If that area were set up so that the railroad tracks, or railyard, housing the stadium’s roof were behind left field, as opposed to beyond right field, then spectators could have a full, unobstructed view of beyond the park. This is significant because that’s exactly what Amtrak’s 14th St. Yard could allow for.

The area I’ve outlined in yellow is Amtrak’s yard. The area I’ve outlined in red is BNSF’s yard. If arranged, Ishbia’s stadium could use the air space above BNSF’s yard to house a potential roof, similarly to T-Mobile Park’s setup. It would come from across the other side of the field, but I see no reason why that couldn’t be done.

I don’t mean to rant about something purely hypothetical, but I figured you all on this forum might appreciate the concept. Hopefully we hear more news on the stadium front soon.

Arrowhead Stadium has already hosted a number of major concerts. It doesn't look like KC is too small for huge acts like Beyonce and Taylor Swift.
