Fall/Winter Ball 2025

Recommended Posts

1. Sam Antonacci, 2B, White Sox
  • Team: Glendale Desert Dogs
  • Age: 22
  • Why He’s Here: .692/.765/.923 (9-for-13), 5 R, 0 2B, 0 3B, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 4 BB, 2 SO, 5-for-6 SB

The Scoop: While Antonacci may lack the prototypical power of an AFL standout, his blend of contact, approach and speed was very much on display last week. The 22-year-old was an impossible out, as he reached base in 13 of his 17 trips to the batter’s box. Once on base, he put his wheels to good use, stealing five bases. The former Coastal Carolina standout enjoyed a breakout season in 2025, hitting .291/.433/409 with 48 stolen bases across 116 games. Antonacci lacks the impact typical of an everyday regular, but he’s showing a nice combination of plate skills and speed that could soon earn him opportunities in the majors.

Isn't actually inspiring either.  Looks like a Kwan/Arraez type ceiling.

How about a Wade Boggs ceiling?  He was 24 when he came up to the Red Sox.  .318/.412/.386 minor league split.  Ant is 23 with a minor league .298/.439/.413 split.  Boggs averaged 8 homers a year in the majors but put up a career 328/.415/.443.   Boggs had a 7 year stretch where he put up an average of 8 WAR a year.  Both left handed hitters.  Boggs had the Green Monster to plop 45 doubles off of, but Ant has way more speed.  If one is going to dream, dream bigger than Kwan (though Kwan is having a nice career).

Yeah, I am not interested in putting a Hall of Fame ceiling on anyone in this system today.

Unclear why there's so much negativity on Antonacci. Producing really well at AA and now AFL. Completely unheralded and cost the White Sox no more than a 5th round selection. His ceiling might be solid MLB regular? Oh no!! Good organizations should produce guys like that. He's certainly fitting a "type" from the Getz era in terms of making great swing decisions but lacking power. I see it as a possibly-smart approach by Getz to look for players with great approaches at the plate when you're in a situation with no perfect players available. Frankly, good swing decisions might be even harder to teach than power hitting.

Recognizing his limitations isn't "negativity" otherwise you too are being negative here.

Limited power playing 81 home games at GRF isn't necessarily a great idea unless you have 3-4 true sluggers in the lineup.

Montgomerys...maybe Teel or Sosa, but that just puts an awful amount of stress on those secondary guys like Meidroth, Baldwin, Quero and Mead.

Robert isn't realistcally a part of the long-term plan.

That means the 2026 draft has to go exactly right and Carlson needs to be able to at least hit 10-12 homers eventually.

If you want to advance in the postseason, you need a fifth or sixth rounder to eventually make an impact like Addison Barger did.

HoF 1B might help some, too.

Antonacci 3-5, HR, sb, 3R .394 1.074, playing ss today. Braden 1-3, 2bb .351 1.124. Fall League and all that, but these guys are both pretty close. The Meidroth/Antonacci debate is gonna be spirited. Not by much, but I am Team Antonacci.

As long as he grades out as at least an average big league defender somewhere...

We've already had a number of debates on Baldwin Vargas Colson Sosa Mead and Meidroth.

Carlson seems to be the only unquestioned glove talent.

For a strikeout deficient starting rotation...pretty critical.

Both Antonacci and Meidroth are good 2b who can play ss in a pinch. The question with both is impact, not defense.

rumor has it the rest of the Fall League games are going to be only 7 innings as teams are running out of pitchers

that was only for yesterday at Peoria, don't really know why it was only 7
