I've been under the impression that if JR sold the team now he would  be taxed to death. What if he decided to give the new ownership complete control of the franchise now and he  just sat back and let the new owner run the team.  JR  would still own the team .  Perhaps I'll write JR suggesting this idea.  He use to respond to my letters until I asked him to be interviewed for the White Sox GM job.

The IRS would almost certainly see that as a transparent attempt to avoid capital gains taxes. If the IRS finds that delaying the sale until after JR's death serves no business purpose other than to avoid taxes, the law allows the government to treat the sale as having taken place the day JR turned over control.

Give it 7 or 8 years.

  • The Sox are their own self fulfilling prophecy ("We aren't ready to compete so we can't spend money!") You aren't ready to compete because you refuse to spend money, you gaslighting fucks

  • You'd have a hard time convincing me Schwarber is the best use of whatever funds they may have available. This team is 2 years away from being 2 years away. Schwarber is going to be massively overpaid

and the Pirates offered 4/120. Sox didn't even have a seat at the kiddie table.

Only because they knew he wouldn't sign with them otherwise this could be filed under fake news

Didn't know that. Thanks. I'm not sure how they could know that without interrogating family members, which would never happen anyway. Unless the IRS reads Sox Talk.

The legal question is whether a future sale would be "compelled" or "a virtual certainty" at the time JR hands over control. Since there's already paperwork that gives both parties options to complete the sale - and since Ishbia is already referring to himself as the future owner - that would probably be an easy case for the IRS to make.

That's likely the reason that every statement from the team and every interview from Ishbia has included a sentence that Jerry is still in charge.

Yuck.

Pagan pushed them right to the precipice of financial catastrophe lol.

Somehow Francona keeps getting it done with these small market budgets.

Why did any Sox fan even want Schwarber? He's a nice player, but he's 32-years-old and can't play a position. Certainly doesn't fit within the timeline of a team that is just starting to tread out of its rebuild.

I'm glad he's sticking in Philly. They really like him there. Some of my Philly friends compare him to Ryan Howard, not just in their power/eye kinda game, but their impact off the field. Schwarber is a fan favorite and the city likes him, he was obviously gonna stay there. He wasn't getting that sort of love on the north side.

His 4.7 bWAR and .928 OPS.  But I do agree, due to his age he doesn’t match up with the Sox timeline.

Yeah I would've liked watching him next year and I bet he'd win us some games, it's just a lot of money and I can't see him getting any better or even propelling the team to the playoffs. I think it makes sense for Philly, for other teams it feels like the Benintendi special. Tucker is the only high-priced American hitter I'd want out of this free agent class and that's unfortunately not gonna happen. Okamoto is the guy I'd really want the Sox to make a run for. I think the class next year looks better and we have another year of seeing who's actually useful and who needs to be replaced.

Have you seen our offense?  No he doesn't fit our timeline and payroll,  but all the dude does it hit bombs.
