Munemania: Murakami hits 11th HR, tied for league lead

Figured the main Mune thread could get a new title.

Dude is bonkers. Ishbia should strong arm Reinsdorf in whatever capacity he can, because a Japanese superstar would be an amazing team asset to have when opening a new stadium.

  • He’s not much more expensive than O’Hearn would have been with an incredible amount more of upside and flip potential.  There is no downside to this deal, as let’s be honest, they’ve wasted 17 mil a y

If he keeps going at this rate, what is he worth? Vlad Jr. is probably the best comp. Good luck, Jerry.

  • Juan Soto (Mets): $765 million (15 years, signed 2024)

  • Shohei Ohtani (Dodgers): $700 million (10 years, signed 2023)

  • Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (Blue Jays): $500 million (14 years, signed 2025)

  • Mike Trout (Angels): $426.5 million (12 years, signed 2019)

  • Mookie Betts (Dodgers): $365 million (12 years, signed 2020)

Ohtani, Trout and Betts all had 10 WAR seasons before they signed those contracts

Best to look and compare to 1B/DH contracts…

1st Base Contracts

A real-time, sortable list of 1st base contracts including total value, guaranteed money, and complete salary breakdowns.

Bryant (3B), Olson, Freeman, Alonso, Naylor, Contreras…

Vladdy and Harper (RF) set the market here.

Then there’s Schwarber and Yordan Alvarez.

Guerrero might be comparable, but that seems like a crazy contract to me to begin with. Could easily see him bottoming out for the last ten years of that. Alonso and Schwarber each around 33.5+ per year on shorter deals

Vlad Jr. peaked at around 6 WAR and signed his $500 million deal last year.

Yeah, because they are older. Vlad Jr. got paid so much due to youth and potential, but yeah, will likely bottom out on that massive deal.

You are comparing a 26/27 year old to Schwarber who signed an extension in December at age 32 and Alonso who signed with Baltimore at age 31.

Ohtani doesn’t make sense either because of his unicorn-dual use status.

Kyle Tucker plays RF and at least had a history of being a high level outfield defender.

Jose Abreu with more pop and a lower batting average also comes to mind.

but seems his fast start has Jose Abreu 2014/Carlos Quentin 2008 being bypassed, lol

Soto is a bat first outfielder but that still has a lot more fWAR value

And of course on the Southside you have Konerko and post MVP level Frank Thomas…that incredible run of hitting was 1990-1997-98 or thereabouts.

David Ortiz would be another decent comp…imo

I’m guessing $300 million on the low end if he keeps this up, primarily due to his age and potential.

Sox should definitely extend him (imo), but overpaying right now wouldn't be the best thing for a 1b/dh. I have no problem with them waiting until after this year or next year, at least they would have a better idea of what he really is, vs extrapolating from 26 game sample

Outs Above Average is very good, 82nd Percentile

I've seen a little chatter about NYY potentially going for a Ben Rice extension. Could provide another possible comp if they do.

The only comparison I made was t9 Guerrero. Reading comprehension

So you just randomly brought up Alonso and Schwarber’s contracts in the same post for no reason at all? Scattered unrelated thoughts.

Don't they already have direct flights from ORD to Tokyo?

Fun read. Obviously some of it is the affability of Mune himself, but in addition to the on field stuff it's been great to watch how comfortably he seems to have settled in even after missing some time with the team for the WBC.

I would extend him 5 years x $40M.

Hometown, at least where he went to high school

far southernmost region of Japan

99% sure he's not married, probably maintain residence in Tokyo as well because of time with the Swallows

Deferred? big thing to do now is massive signing bonus and then pushing the majority of the contract somewhere into the Ishbian future

You can also do annual signing bonuses, which is how most of Vlad Jr's deal is paid. Probably mostly to minimize his personal tax hit though.
