Plenty of guys to potentially DFA including Joe Rock, Tyler Davis, Tyler Gilbert, Duncan Davitt, Urquidy, plus I believe there will be a trade involving either Grichuk or Hays.

Yes, bigger roster crunch will be in the offseason when more of the 60 Day IL guys need to come off.

I do hope that changes in the next CBA (and saw it in the players proposal) that you can keep/place guys on the 60-day IL in offseason. Though, if you make that commitment, they should have to be IL’d the first 60 days next season to avoid manipulation. Just like when you place them on 60-day when Spring Training starts.

They're definitely not cutting Thorpe for the likes of Joe Rock lol

Hays needs to be decided today if they want to trade him.

They can trade someone while they are on the IL

Just saying that's when their IL stints are officially over.

Post deadline they can trade someone on the IL? And still get someone back in return?

Oh I thought you meant they had to make a 40-man/60-day IL decision on him. My bad.

He’ll either be traded or activated (currently have the 40-man spot open) and DFA’d

Yeah, I just mean they effectively need to make a call on Hays today if they want to trade him (or Grichuk). Obviously if there is no market, they can wait until the 6th in case someone gets hurt in the Boston series. I think they look to move one of them today though. Not going to get much, but a lot of teams could use a RH platoon or bench bat.

Roster crunches are what happens when you go from sucky to reasonably good. The Sox have been able to operate a revolving door of waiver claims for the last 3 years. Now, they're going to lose some marginal big leaguers as their roster gets harder to make. Guys like Drew Romo, Junior Perez, and some of the pitchers may get taken for nothing. That's the price of getting some better players. I am not worried. Hopefully, they'll be able to do what Tampa is often quite good at: Getting value for players who are 40 man casualties/out of options.
