2 hours ago2 hr The problem is even if they don't pan out, they are still worth something - mainly the ability to have used in another trade. Hahn showed how tight the inventory was when he was already dipping into major league 'surplus' to balance the roster in '21 (lynn, kimbrel trades) and had nothing left that was plausibly valuable in 22 to get a difference maker.Shorter version - there is still in opportunity cost in that you can't trade them more than once, so you better be sure you target the right upgrades.

The Sox have made some epically stupid trades of prospects that really turned out. Another example is that total douchebag that the Mets traded to the North Siders. Does this mean I think the Sox should have a cowardly approach to trading prospects at this year's deadline? NO! But there's a ton of weight behind some of the 2 to 3 that do turn out.
