This doesn't mean "don't be afraid to trade prospects because they don't pan out". This means "teams don't trade their good prospects".

The problem is even if they don't pan out, they are still worth something - mainly the ability to have used in another trade. Hahn showed how tight the inventory was when he was already dipping into major league 'surplus' to balance the roster in '21 (lynn, kimbrel trades) and had nothing left that was plausibly valuable in 22 to get a difference maker.

Shorter version - there is still in opportunity cost in that you can't trade them more than once, so you better be sure you target the right upgrades.

But some of the ones that do turn out - hoo boy! The Sox have made some epically stupid trades of prospects that really turned out. Another example is that total douchebag that the Mets traded to the North Siders.

Does this mean I think the Sox should have a cowardly approach to trading prospects at this year's deadline? NO! But there's a ton of weight behind some of the 2 to 3 that do turn out. Getz has his work cut out for him this week: help put the Sox over the top while not becoming Kenny 2.0.

TBH, ontologically I've never agreed with Trade Winds as a sub forum of Pale Hose Talk.

Can't read the article, but one wonders what criteria he is using for 'prospect' vs 'farmhand' and how 'prospects' generally turn out. Maybe he made that comparison.

My issue with the Sox and their approach to trades or free agency is they waste money and assets to get marginally better. If you're going to trade just a few chips to pick up like 3 more games and maybe be marginally more competitive in round 1 don't bother. Save the money and chips for the off-season and go all in (or wait to do it the following year or that when you feel the time is right). That's one thing Preller seems to understand, if you're gonna swing, swing for the fences otherwise you're just showing enough effort to justify keeping your job but you don't have a viable strategy for legitimately winning it all and at the end that's all that matters.
