Can someone explain to me why the Orioles are selling but just acquired an old catcher with an expiring contract in Jake Rogers from the Tigers?

I forgot a few days ago he had that weird thing during the game where he asked Pete Alonso if he was blind.

He’s been throwing BP and Twins gave up a decent prospect for him

I know that Kremer has control beyond this year, but this seems like a lot to give up for someone with a ERA north of 6. Reyes is a top 10 prospect in the Twins system.

With Dean Kremer I don’t think it was so innocent. Atleast not according to Os fans.

The Twins were able to not just agree on the framework, but finalize the trade for their negative WAR pitcher.
Goody for them.

For the Orioles, a nice example of Always Be Selling. If someone wants to give you a nice prospect for Kremer, you take it.

Always be buying is a better motto if you like winning

Kremer put up 2.6 fWAR last year. He’s 30 years old and has made seven total starts this year due to a quad injury. His stuff appears to be very similar to last year and his K rate is way up due to increased usage of his splitter. In this very small sample size, he’s given up a fuckton of HRs…that’s what has done him in.

Candidly, if you think there’s an obvious fix to the long ball problem, then this isn’t really a bad trade. The 2025 version of Kremer with 1 1/3 years of team control would command more than a 40 FV prospect, especially so in a seller’s market. It’s a gamble no doubt, but potentially a savvy one if SSS stats coming off of an injury are lowering his value.
