Once the big network deals start losing games is the first time things will get serious. Asset valuations continue to grow so I am not certain why the owners want to adjust the system. Winning and losing means nothing to the asset valuation.

Winning and losing means nothing to the asset valuation. As Ken Rosenthal has written (I think I've seen others as well) the unnamed reason for the labor situation is the owners are upset the value of their franchises hasn't increased to the range of NFL and NBA franchises. They feel a salary cap and cost certainty will dramatically increase the value of their teams. It has very little to do with the competition aspect of the sport.

Both sides are concerned about themselves first, especially the owners. They won't care about the fans until they start losing more money than they're comfortable with losing in a labor dispute.
