5th Starter blues, Another Factor

Featured Replies

Has anyone else noticed that the offense takes the day aff when the winner of our 5th Starter of the Day contest takes the mound? We pound out 10 runs and anyone of these guys suddenly doesn't look all that bad, they get a second start, maybe feel somewhat successful, keep their heads in the game.

Now you look up and down the bench and all I saw was deer in the headlights looks. The whole team is expecting to lose.

Maybe they missed Ozzie.

It wasn't just that last game either. Every time that it's roulette wheel day the team has that "we're gonna lose anyway" attitude.

but losing one of every five isnt horrible.... even losing two of 5 isnt bad... but i see where you're coming from and i agree

Yeah, but the way things are it;s kinda like we're conceeding the 5th starter day & that's just not cool.

i agree with ya, imagine where we could be if we were playing hard on the 5th starter days too... ok so we'd win 11-10 but it'd still be a win

I did a little research on run support for our starters.

Mark B had 87 runs scored in his 11 starts for an average of 7.90 runs per game

Jon G had 59 runs scored in his 10 starts for an average of 5.90 runs per game

Scott S had 57 runs scored in his 10 starts for an average of 5.70 runs per game

ELo had 50 runs scored in his 10 starts for an average of 5.00 runs per game

5th starter had 20 runs scored in their 8 starts for an average of 2.5 runs per game

In fact Danny Wright lost 5-4 to the Yankees, 3-0 and 4-1 to Tampa, so Danny actually kept us in 3 of his 4 starts.

Nice work.

It is very interesting to see the break down.

A little research on our offense when the 5th starter is pitching.

Wright

4/11 4-5 loss

4/16 0-3 loss

4/26 1-4 loss

5/1 6-10 loss (game 2 DH)

For Danny we scored 4,0,1,6 runs

Felix Diaz

5/13 6-5 W 3 runs scored before he was pulled

5/17 2-7 loss

Diaz gets 6, 2 runs

Jon Rauch

5/30 1-5 loss

Rauch gets 1 run (zero when he is in the game)

Cotts

5/22 1-9 loss in his only start 1 frickin run

With all the trade threads and who we should get, anybody think we could fix this issue with offense? We could have Randy Johnson and he's got a losing record with this run support.

Yeah, we were also facing the Brad Radke's, Aaron Sele's, and others who just plain own us like that.

Where have I heard this before? ---

Oh yeah it's been in my signature for 3 days.

Our offense just needs to wake up and start supporting who we have on a the field... and hopefully that guy is Felix Diaz or Ramon Ortiz... :bringit

Maybe they take a different approach? Thinking that they better score a lot of runs cause they know the 5th starter is gonna give up a lot of runs? Therefore they kinda mentally take themselves outta the game.

Crawl out from under Ramon Ortiz's nutsack --

He had an ERA of almost 7 after the all-star break last season. He HAS an ERA of nearly 7 so far this season. His WHIP is nearly 2.00, Opponents are batting .338 against him..

We'd be better off running out one of Nukes T-ball stands every 5 days than making some ridiculous deal for Ramon Ortiz. David Ortiz can outpitch this guy.

Our offense has no trouble at all producung runs, it's just that attitude thing I mentioned when it comes to "Roulette Wheel Day".

You are correct, plus at this point the #5 starter trots out with the pressure of

1. Win or back to the rack for you

2. We aren't going to score any runs

3. We should be a WS team if we can only find a 5th starter.

You can see how this can collectively affect the team. When one of our big 4 are pitching, they feel they have avery good chance to win the game so they subconsciously get up for the game. It's human nature to perform well when you feel good about things. Having said that. the guys need to try and overcome the lethargy they feel when #5 is on the bump. It's not an easy thing to do, but it is the professional thing to do.
