Another 5th starter candidate

Recommended Posts

No, I know you have tickets, but I doublt Helling will pitch.

I'd say right now he has as good of a shot as any other pitcher in the sox organization... And that is the first day a 5th strter will be needed.

Sure it's just some blind optimism on my part, but I think in the limitted role we have for him he would be a welcome addition. He was great out of the pen last year too.

There are 5 starts we need a 5th starter for before the ASB. 4 before July 1 (when KW made his moves last year). 8 before the deadline. Helling can win 3 of those. that's the same as we won all last season from the 5 spot.

Wow, Rick Helling?  I'd just as soon bring back Jim Parque.

Right now,

Helling > Cotts

Helling > Diaz

Helling > Adkins

Helling > Grilli

Helling > Rauch

Helling > Wright

I'm not advocating the guy as our #1 starter, but he's a MAJOR LEAGUE pitcher, who knows how to get guys out, get out of jams, and keep his team in games.

I wouldn't pull off a trade for anyone like him, but the fact is that we don't have to. He won't cost much. He just wants to pitch at the major league level. We want a major league 5th starter. What's not to get? The guy's not Cy Young, but knows how to pitch. Which is the main problem off many on our staff.

Who knows, I may be wrong. But I, Like KW i think, like to leave the fight with no more bullets left. I'm gonna go down swinging.

Good analysis and I agree with you.

I think these position players want to see a proven major leaguer in there vs. a rookie experiment.

I'm not saying their wishes should be automatically catered to, but I really feel these guys think they have a legit shot at the division and they want a veteran.

Rick Helling would make a decent reliever, perhaps. All of those guys that he is greater than on your list are also decent relievers (right now, anyway).

Rick Helling is already 34 years old. He's been around forever. We have seen everything that he has to offer, and it's not much. Take his past three years, for example.

2001 w/Texas Rangers

34 GS

215 IP

256 Hits Allowed

63 Walks Allowed

1.48 WHIP

5.17 ERA

.297 Opponents Batting Average

38 Home Runs Allowed

2002 w/ Arizona Diamondbacks

30 GS

175 IP

180 Hits Allowed

48 Walks Allowed

1.30 WHIP

4.51 ERA

.264 Opponents Batting Average

31 Home Runs Allowed

2003 w/ Baltimore Orioles

24 GS

140 IP

156 Hits Allowed

40 Walks Allowed

1.41 WHIP

5.71 ERA

.286 Opponents Batting Average Allowed

30 Home Runs Allowed

The Home Runs Allowed are particularly disturbing. 30 allowed in only 140 IP pitched last year?

I'd say that even Todd Ritchie is a better pitcher than Rick.

I believe wite posted this in the sports bar as well about Helling being a candidate. Wouldn't hurt IMO.

Let me get this Straight. Many here don't want Freddy Garcia cause he's a flyball pitcher and is 10,000,000 times the Pitcher. But you want Rick helling who is a Flyball pitcher and Hangs that Curveball like bats in a cave?

:nono :nono To Helling :puke :puke

Well, If we can get a decent trade without giving up much for Garcia, (or a Sabathia/Sheets) then by all means f*** yea! But if no team is ready yet, it wouldn't hurt to give a guy a couple starts to see then he'll take it from there.

Garcia will cost 2 to 3 prospects or more --

Helling will cost only his salary.

So.. A no name takes his place and you still think he's serviceable? The twins don't trust him so why would the Sox?

Helling would hav been the #5 starter if he didn't get injured in spring training. They didn't count on Greisinger contributing in their rotation, hence they don't need Helling now.
