LOL,  Joy Division and Interpol fans hate that comparison. I like JD and really like Interpol.

that one doesn't get me as mad (when its used as a negative cause there obviously are similarities) when people say pavement ripped off the fall (WHich came from maybe three songs in their entire catalogue)

Im not too familiar with Pavement, but my best friend loves them, and he is a big Steven Malkmus fan too.

Right now i am way too into anything that Ken Andrews does. It is seriously becoming unhealthy. I might classify myself as a stalker if he keeps releasing albums.

Ah, a Heinlein Stranger homage.  Probably my favorite sci-fi work ever. :notworthy

Hmmm, didnt know about that. the whole song he is singing about a massive roadtrip he went on with a friend named Michael Valentine. here are the lyrics, you tell me if he is paying homage.

Michael plays with stars

Soul Sister won't you take a ride in his car

Late to call

When you wanted to be all

Baby-baby don't be so shy

Rock children hold your heads up high

In the night while I try

And tell the ballad of Valentine

You got it bad, but you know it's true

I caught up with a friend in Dallas

We took a trip to New Orleans

Those black-eyed ladies

Won't say they're sorry

We finally caught a train to Memphis

Where everybody talks the same

Those blue suede babies

All know my name

And I said hold tight

Can't you see that it's hurting me

But I've got the buzz

Like Marlon Brando

Michael Valentine, can't we unite?

We ended up in North Dakota

Although my heart's in Mexico

(spanish language) My munecita

Abren Tus Ojos

With your new suit, and your black tie

Hold on, you're just a gambling man, all proper like

I broke to the right and I caught your eye

Shut your mouth and wave goodbye

Tonight, I ain't gonna let you rain on this parade

And I said hold tight

Can't you see that it's hurting me

But I've got the buzz

Like Marlon Brando

Straight faced with misery tonight

And I will not lie when I say I ain't cold no more

But I've got the buzz

Like Greta Garbo

Walking forward to the sun

And I've got a cold tale left to write

Well uh oh

I know he's gonna be there tonight

Eh, maybe not, although the lines about playing with stars and uniting seem like they could be obscure Valentine Michael Smith/SISL references.

Well, the Killers are a Vegas band. He could be writing obscure references, or talking about being in Vegas and seeing stars. Who knows. Anywho, I really like that song :)

Speaking of The Killers, the Cure, The Smiths.... etc, does anyone like The Dears?

Their last record has grown on me slowly, but in a very big way. It's kind of Morrissey-esque, with slight hints of jazz and trip hop.

Anyone?

I will tell you tomorrow. My Limewire will be hooked up tonite ;)

Well, Muse is much more rocked out than Radiohead ever was. They are starting to develop the oddness of Radiohead though, thats for sure. I still love the song "Hysteria", I think the opening bass/guitar riff is killer.

Let it grow on you. It's not a grab you by throat record. Might take a few listens, it did for me anyway. Now I really like it. It's my new Sunday morning, reading the paper, drinking coffee, brousing through Sox Talk record. :D

I'm not a fan of any of that stuff, really. It just doesn't move me at all. Pavement I like a lot. "Slanted and Enchanted" is timeless.

for me, crooked rain, crooked rain slightly edges out slanted and enchanted...then it goes wowee zowee, terror twilight, and brighten the corners...i don't dislike any pavement album...which is pretty ridiculous when i think about how few bands i can say that about.

I agree Crooked and Slanted are both solid.

What's new that I should get my hands on? Any recommendations?

um...new stuff i got is new 'the new pornographers' - twin cinema, and thats really good pop, i just got a bunch of belle and sebastian but what i've been listening to non stop basically is animal collective - sung tungs and an advance of animal collective - feels as well as teh new broken social scene.

I really like "I am Kloot'

English folk rock band, the lead singer has a bob Dylan feel about him.

1) I read an article in AP about Ian Curtis's last days a few months ago. Really chilling stuff, comments from the band about how they didn't have any idea what was going on with him. I don't care if Joy Division/New Order gets a ton of pub, they spawned a whole (latent) generation of imitators.

2) Pelican - The fire in our throats will beckon the thaw = awesome album.
