Even still, if Gload is the best option for an everyday OF, we need better options like Yas said. Playing a marginal outfielder more isn't suddenly gonna make him a better outfielder.

 

He has limited talent, that's why he's been in the minors for so long.

Most of them are important though.

Mario, he's got such limited experience in the OF and his instincts are not good at all.  How hard is it for an OF to get himself set up properly to make a throw to the plate?  Gload hasn't done it correctly once this year.  An outfielder needs to position himself behind the ball so his momentum is coming forward.

 

Gload should only be in the outfield in emergency or replacement situations.  The Sox have used him way too much in the OF.  He's a first baseman and a good one.

 

Sox should do a lot better for a reserve outfielder - if they want to win.

Gload has been a nice surprise this year, but he is a butcher in the OF, he is 28 years old, and no one else has been willing to give him a starting job. Add those all up, and I see a good bench player at best.

Gload is a solid backup 1B, and a really good pinch-hitter. But he's not a starter. Think of Dave Hansen, Manny Mota, Greg Gross, Lenny Harris, or even Ramon Martinez of the Cubs. They were good when they got an occasional start or pinch-hit, but when they had to play for any length of time in the absence of the regular starter, they were painfully exposed as what they really are - valuable back-ups who serve their purpose - AS BACK-UPS.

 

Plus, Gload is a complete butcher in the outfield. Defensively, he makes Kevin Reimer or Jose Canseco look like Kirby Puckett or Jim Edmonds.

BTW, I'm surprised you didn't mock me for knowing who Greg Gross and Manny Mota were. Yes, I've been around a little while longer than some of you. Just imagine how Yasny feels - he was alive during the last Sox World Series.

Mario, experience and instincts are two different things.

 

If they put me in the outfield, that doesn't mean my instincts would necessarily improve.

 

The point being, he's a good bench player and that's about it. He's been with 3-4 organizations and everyone seems to think the same thing.

I agree with Gload as very valuable, but I would rather trade Konerko for good pitching and then sign J.D. Drew with the money we pocket from Konerko's departure.  Then, I would put Gload in as our 1b, he is much better defensively than Konerko, faster and can hit for a higher average.

What do you mean beastly? JD Drew is one heck of a player and I actually love maggsmaggs ideas, I actually wouldn't have any problem with gload starting at first base because he's a very good first basemen, also ross can hit, I wouldn't start him in the outfield because he's very uncomfortable out there. I think it was quickman who said we need a first basemen who's a great gloveman, can hit 15 homers and bat .275, gload might fit all those descriptions. As far as JD Drew he'd be an absolutely perfect replacement for maggs, he's left handed high avg, good power, good outfielder, good speed, the only problem is Boras is his agent.
