I don't usually pimp my blog here, but I thought that many of you should read this. I finally broke down and did a hatchet job on Timo Perez. Any feedback welcome, I have thick skin.

Ranger factor is a bull s*** stat. It says Jose has it, but he can't field worth his life. You don't play center field because you're a crappy fielder. Timo is a good bench player, the best outfield reserve we've had in quite some time.

Timo leads the Sox by far in productive out percentage.

Range Factor is not a "bull s***" stat. But in order to fully appreciate it you must use it in context and with other defensive stats, and have a large sample size.

 

RF is affected by those around you, (i.e @ SS, a rangey thrid baseman cutting off a ball that you could have played thus decreasing you balls fielded). I'll acknowledge that Timo may have had some balls taken from him by an overzealous Aaron Rowand, but he still has no range.

No real studies have been done on productive outs, though all early indications are that there is no correlation between productive outs and winning baseball...

 

This is not to completely discount productive outs as a stat. The problem is Productive outs are only useful in certain situations. Ex. I don't care if a player advanced a runner in a game like yesterday where we were down 7+ runs. Sometimes a productive out is good. Sometimes it's just an out.

I've hated Timo this entire year, yet other Sox fans complain about my criticism of him. Yes, he's had some clutch hits this year, but in the games that he's started, he's play like s*** for the most part. His defense, in terms of range, is absolutely awful. He plays deep, and lacks any speed to make up on bad jumps. One of the reason I think Sox fans think Timo is so great is that Hawk is a huge fan of Timos. It seems like Hawk believes Timo can do no wrong. I've even seen some fans that want Timo starting in RF next year. Please god no Timo starting! Great write up on him Cheat.

Ranger factor is bull s***. That stat is more based off your teammates than it is you. It's a ratio based on the number of outs the player makes to the number of outs his team makes, rather than the number of outs the rest of the players at his position make. Like you said, Aaron Rowand takes balls away from Timo Perez, thus hurting his range factor number. How can you honestly take away from a players range because he has a centerfielder that takes balls away? It's not even close to a fair assessment.

 

And Carl Everett used to play CF and he used to be somewhat decent. Now? Not so much. That's why you don't see him in CF, let alone right or left anymore.

Timo is one of those guys you need on your team to win and I could care less what his stats are. He bunts, he moves runners over, he's a clutch hitter, he sacrifices himself, every winning team has a guy like Timo.

That Timo's job is being a bench player and nothing more, while coming in in RISP or bunting opportunity's. I don't see how you can hate him for doing his job.

Im not trying to speak for Cheat, but I think he is more just writing about the fact how all the sudden there is a  love fest for him, when in all reality, he is semi-hot

Cheat never liked him since he's been here. Take that FWIW.

I don't think timo is a starter but I have no clue how you can hate the guy. How can you hate a guy that has been one of if not the best clutch hitter we got, our best bunter, a guy that can handle the bat well, and a guy that is slow as hell yet he scares the s*** out of of pitchers when he's on base. Timo is an outstanding 4th outfielder.

because peeps with a hard-on for sabermetrics don't care about any of those things. to them, there's no such thing as a clutch hitter and bunting and stealing are almost always counterproductive.

That's what you're basing your judgement on... a specially selected group of AB's that only represent 15% of his AB's over that stretch... Thank you for further reinforcing the nickname Broken Clock.

You can't deny that consistency. It's not just a coincidence that he puts up almost the exact same offensive numbers in about 40 games in one batting slot. But, argue on if you must.
