September 22, 200421 yr Now the only free agent closers on the market this off-season will be Armando Benitez who will snapped up quickly, Bob Wickman, and possibly Ugueth Urbina if the Tiggies don't pick up his option. Shawn Chacon could make $3 mill in arbitration next season. But he has a 1-9 record with a 6.68 ERA. He made the NL All Star team last season as a starter, and he has 34 saves this year. With the payroll limitations the Rockies have, Chacon could easily be had for the right price, a young pitcher or prospect most likely. Would you trade for him and pay him $3 mill though? Now there's this on Julio, The Orioles face a difficult call on embattled closer Jorge Julio, whose 82 saves over his first three seasons will give him a strong case entering his first year of arbitration. Dodgers closer Eric Gagne is earning $5 million this season after entering his first year of arbitration with 107 saves. If the Orioles make LHP B.J. Ryan their closer, Julio will be overpaid as a setup man. Trading Julio might be the best solution. ... KW has said improving the bullpen will be a big priority this off-season. Cotts and Adkins will have increased roles with Shingo surely coming back for $2.5 million. How would having a power closer with Shingo in the 8th look though?
September 22, 200421 yr Yea that will make Shing 10x's more dominant, and also make the closer look like Gagne.
September 22, 200421 yr I think Shingo will be back in set up, and used as insurance if the closer gets hurt or fails. the key is getting a proven 9th inning guy, or moving someone from set up to closer, ala Dotel, Nathan, Lidge, etc. I haven't checked on either guy. But it's good to start looking. Seeing as Benitez and Felix Rodriguez are the only FA's out there [Percival has reportedly gotten back to 95-96 mph and could come cheaper], a trade will likely help the Sox bullpen.
September 22, 200421 yr Chacon f***ing sucks. Who cares how many saves he has because he walks the bases loaded everytime he comes out there. I remember hearing that the Rockies were going to put him back into the rotation next year because of his struggles as the closer.

September 22, 200421 yr well, ron gardenhire hates jorge julio so i say go get him. julio would have stuck it in torii hunter's ear.

September 22, 200421 yr chacon has a high era but i dont think he has blown that many saves and you know even though we in a hitters park 2... it isnt the same as pitching in colorado...look what it did to jason jennings

AWAY: 5.12 ERA, 17/21 (SV/OP,) 1.64 WHIP, 23 K's, 20 BB's. THOSE NUMBERS ARE f***ING ATROCIOUS!
September 23, 200421 yr Let me add that Julio and Chacon both seem like assholes also. Julio has a history of throwing at players.

September 23, 200421 yr What the hell is wrong with that? We dont want pussy pitches. That is exactly what we need an intimidator that can hit the high 90's followed by shingo or vice versa.
September 23, 200421 yr Anyone on here know how highly the Pirates regard Salomon Torres? He has been lights out this year, and I think he could be a kind of guy that could come somewhat cheaply and potentially even become a closer with us.

I would like someone much more proven than a career era of 4.84.
September 23, 200421 yr I'll pass on Torres for one reason. He's lost two games to the Cubs in the last 2 weeks. If you can't find a way to strike out C. Patterson, then you're not that good, IMO. As we speak, the two dicks in the Cubs booth, Chip and Stone, are ripping on Torres for being a skinnier Antonio Alfonseca.
September 23, 200421 yr It was honestly just a suggestion. He has pretty good stuff and has some very solid numbers this year, and what I didn't look at before that I did look at after I made my post is that he's 32...so he's not like some top prospect. And I think we all still owe him for hitting Sosa. That was beautiful.
September 23, 200421 yr Yeah, I wonder why more teams don't brush back Sosa more considering how much the hbp messed him up afterwards.

September 24, 200421 yr While Julio wouldn't take any crap from the Twins, he sucks! I have him on my fantasy team, and while I don't know the exact number of blown saves, it seems to me like he has blown alot. And I mean those .2 IP, 3 walks, 5 runs kind-of innings. Between him and Urbina, my closer ERA has been going sky high. I know he has blown like 4 saves in just september.
