hey, money question here

I was just wondering what the payroll would look like if the whole Vazquez thing happens.... and if that "non-rumor" about us matching the angels offer for Clement is indeed true, is there any chance in the world we could land both? Or would that be way over our payroll?

If we get Vazquez, it depends on how much money we get in the deal vs how much money we give up. Concievably we could end up with less payroll after a Vazquez, cash acquistion/PK,Garland subtraction. I could potentially leave room for Clement also, along with a new 1B.

Here is a worksheet I have been keeping regarding the Sox payroll for 2005. I have the roster currently at 22, with Adkins, Grilli or Cotts getting one spot. If no other starting pitcher is acquired two could make the club. If they decide to go with 12 pitchers early and use Willie as their 5th OF, then two or even all three could make it depending on whether they acquire a starter. Regardless of which one makes it, the money should be very close to the same.

The salaries for the bottom group are estimates based on their service time or other information I have obtained from various sources. The list or salaries may need a tweak here ore there, but for the most part, I believe it is a pretty accurate portrayal of the Sox current situation. If I missed someone or am off on a number somewhere, please let me know.

A thread with just that chart and exact numbers should be stickied in this forum. There are questions everyday about payroll.

Rex that is an incredible help, thanks for posting and doing that!

Wow thats a nice chart Rex.

Looks like the Sox may have a little more cash then some of us think.

yeah..i thought they had less to spend....i was wrong....DEAD WRONG... :bang :bang

Borchard will be on the roster, so take out the OF and whatever he makes.

That leaves 11 mil for SP and MI

Rumor has it Hairston jr. will be non-tendered. Likewise Alex Cora.

Placido Polanco is better, but he's going to cost more too.

You could sign Odalis Perez/Polanco

or you could sign Clement/Alex Cora.

Either of those can be done without trading anybody.

Well can somebody verify that all those salaries are correct? It sounded like Rex wasn't 100% on that.

If Hairston Jr. gets non-tendered I bet the sox make a phone call, just like they do if Cora gets non-tendered.

Considering the Sox have about 11.5 to spend now, they could have some options depending on what they do. God I hope they get RJ or Hudson and then could pick up one of the non-tenders and Pyrz.

That would be a pipedream I'm sure but wow. Oh ya, a 5th starter too.

I am 99% sure they are all correct in the top group. My only question is Contreras. I believe he is set to make $8 million, but the Yankees are paying $2 mil of it, so I have him down at $6 mil. If someone could confirm that, that would be great.

The numbers in the bottom group are for players who are not yet signed. None are free agents so they are still property of the Sox, but their contracts have not yet been renewed or negotiations/arbitration finalized.

The only one I think I am potentially off on is Contreras. Other than that, it is right there, depending on what guys in the bottom group get. For instance, I only had Uribe making $1 million this year before he signed the new contract. So I was pretty far off on him. I think the others will be much closer, unless someone like Rowand gets a 3-year deal as well.

Edit: So much for 99%. Keep finding my mistakes and I will get them all correct. Thanks for all the nitpicking. :)

The key is, IF they spend it. If they can't get Clement and they don't think any other pitcher is worth the dollars they will spend, then KW will go into the season holding back money for upgrades. It is not what we'd like to see, but if it helps make an acquisition that makes a difference in the standings, then so be it. If it just helps acquire Everett and Alomar again...... oh, wait, we already have Everett......

it's nitpicky...but didn't Garland just sign for $3.4 mil?

What about Timo? Isn't he still under contract?

Yeah, one year at $3.4 million.

Ya, your correct on Contreras.

The Yankees are throwing some cash our way each year Contreras is under contract too. :bringit

That was accounted for.

nitpick away...... That one has been fixed.

What about Timo? Isn't he still under contract?

Borchard will be on the roster, so take out the OF and whatever he makes.

Timo is arbitration eligible. I didn't include him on the list because I was not convinced that the Sox will keep him. It would surprise me at all if they non-tender him by not offering arbitration. If they do, then he can be added with no problem. He may be fill the last OF spot. Not sure how much Timo would get and if that would affect competition, however. Anyone know what Timo made last year?

Also not convinced Borchard will be there. If he is, it will likely be at the expense of Timo and also Alex Escobar. I would not be surprised to see another OF acquired, but they may just go into ST allowing one of the three above to win the job. Honestly, I don't believe Borchard should be anywhere near Chicago. He still has options remaining, so that should not be a problem.

I guess we do have quite a few outfielders. So Timo may be gone. I may be way off but it seems like Perez was in the $1.3M range.

Off quite a bit. ESPN lists Timo at $850,000

I like Timo, but they won't re-sign him.

Forgot about Escobar, I'll have to take the Borchard statement back. I believe I've already predicted Escobar would win the OF spot earlier this year.

Don't be so sure about timo not coming back. Also, i do not like him.

Politte is making $900,000 next year with a $100,000 buyout. His old contract had an option for $1.3 million.

Hermanson is making $2 million this year, and $3 million in 2006 witha $500,000 buyout.

id sign hairston. clement at 10 mil is way too much money. get perez at like 7.5 miland pierz at 4 or 5 mil then sign hairston for like 750,000. that would fill all of our holes.

You're over budget right there and 7.5 mil for Perez is to low he'll end up with like 9 mil, once other teams start looking at him.
