Tigers discuss Ordonez with agent

No deal close for former White Sox slugger

By Jason Beck / MLB.com

Don't count the Tigers out of the free-agent market just yet.

While another free agent was on the verge of spurning Detroit for another city on Saturday, with Dearborn native Derek Lowe apparently headed to Los Angeles, industry sources told MLB.com the Tigers are interested in former White Sox outfielder Magglio Ordonez and have discussed him with agent Scott Boras. No deal is close, but the pursuit could set up another January free-agent watch between the Tigers and Boras, not to mention a multi-team chase for the consolation prize in the Carlos Beltran sweepstakes.

Maggs Sucks

i dont care what you all think.... a cows ass sideways of an uncles dick pimple ... isnt as good as maggs! so take that!

He'll be begging for the fences to be moved in after the first homestand.

I'd love this, we'd get to play him 19 times a year and get to boo him 9 or 10 games at the Cell.

:bringit

i'm guessing not good, and with that injury , it'b be interesting to see him run the gaps of Comerica. It sounds like another Fernando Viña for the Tigers in Ordoñez

Magglio will thrive where ever he goes. Its sad he had to leave us...but as long as he doesn't go to the cubs, i'm happy.

If by thriving you mean prolonged DL stints, lower numbers to ones he produced with the White Sox and never going to the playoffs again, sure he'll thrive.

Just giving you a hard time Beastly, no hard feelings at all.

You've been doing a nice job around here lately, really.

Thanks, its nice to know some encouragement sometimes...

All the Maggs detractors need to make up their minds. If they think he now sucks and will suck, they should be doing cartwheels and backflips that he turned down the Sox offer. If you are really pissed at him for not signing, you must think he will return to previous levels of performance.

This would be the best news ever.

I would love for Maggs to be stuck with the Tiggies. At best he will end up being a DH and he will be on the DL sometime next season.

Plus they don't have the pitching to really accomplish anything.

Have fun Maggs!

I'm not upset at all.

I'd rather have Pods, Dye, El Duque, AJ and Hermanson than Maggs and Lee.

Come to think of it, wouldn't Maggs being on the Tigers remind you of Dean Palmer and how he had stints like that?

It might not be so bad an option for Maggs. If his knee is as bad as it sounds he could DH there. Unlike the grubs who don't have a dh, although they play one in RF, and the Orioles, who have Raphael Palmeiro, the Tigers could use him there. Last year they used mostly Dmitri Young and Rondell White, both of whom can be used in the field, and -while I like Dmitri- Maggs is a clear improvement over either of them.

Detroit and Boras put language in Ivan Rodreguez' contract last year to protect the team if his back blew out. A similar agreement limiting the Tiger's risk of Magg's knee not coming back could make this pretty attractive to them.

The first place I want Maggs is here with us... since that isn't going to happen, I want Maggs as far away from the Sox as possible. I DO NOT want to see him go to the Cubs, or anyone in our division... I really don't even want to see him in the American League. Thats my feelings on this. Please someone in the N.L. besides the Cubs come calling for Maggs.

I heard Steve Phillips on ESPN Radio specualting that Houston might make a play for Magglio, at a somewhat-less-than-top money offer. Since they lost out on Beltran, the feeling is that they need to go after somebody pretty good to try to lure Clemens back out of retirement mode again.

Sad thing is, Magglio has kind of become a forgotten man. Even Phillips mentioned how the Astros "will go after Magglio or someone of that level", implying that he's below Beltran. Last year's playoffs notwithstanding, Magglio at 100% gives you VERY similar production to what Beltran offers, other than basestealing potential.

If Magglio is healthy, Boras will have played this perfectly. He didn't work out at the Winter Meetings because he wasn't ready. He may be now. Boras knows exactly where teams were willing to go to with Beltran, and now he uses Maggs as the consolation prize, maximizing his dollars. If Magglio can't run, then all bets are off.

I dont care where Mags goes he can go to hell for all I care..He is such a greedy SOB.

Lets crucify him!

His injury could happen to a better guy after he turns down 68M offer he get hurt 2 weeks later..

Than after the season he says the sox gave him no respect and they dont care about winning..

I do hope you sign with the Tigers so I can boo your ass 19 times a year and also so you can finished in last place for the next 5 years

hey, we should all be glad maggs didn't take our offer and was 'greedy.' we look to be a better team this year without him. i don't think we should give him that hard of a time, he probably didn't want to stay here and that was his way of getting out, you can't blame someone for wanting that. he gave us a lot of good times and i still wish him the best... so long as its not with the cubs and preferably not with anyone in our division :D .

Frank

Just throwing out a thought...

If maggs couldn't get anyone to sign him for a decent amount of cash, I wonder if the Sox may have pursued him if they hadn't acquired dye. I'm thinking $4-5 mil with incentives for 1 year. I'm not sure exactly how incentives are worked out, but we could give him some cash for games played, average, and homers.

However, I'm pretty glad he isn't coming back now, so I'm not saying we should/ should have done this, just wondering if there was a possiblility of it happenning.
