January 18, 200521 yr Since there's not much else to talk about ... Sox will undoubtedly bring in a few guys on minor league contracts, especially/hopefully for starting pitching depth. One name to watch ... Casey Daigle, RHP, recently designated for assignment by Arizona D-Backs. Terrible stats in 10 starts for the D-Backs last year, but had a decent year in AA El Paso 2003. Young guy, age 24, big, was a high draft pick for Arizona. Reason for the hunch? He's getting married to Jennie Finch, the softball player for the Chicago Bandits, coincidentally a new corporate partner of the White Sox. Total speculation on my part, but the Sox know the D-Backs organization very well and should have a good read on this guy. He's certainly young enough to bring him in for depth. I've not seen that Daigle has caught on elsewhere, so perhaps it's possible.
January 18, 200521 yr The BOB is a hitters park as well, so it's not like there's going to be a huge difference if he pitched at the Cell. He's a young guy with potential though, and he'd an excellent guy to give an invite too. The Knights and Barons rotations are going to be pretty stocked as usual in 2005, but I'm sure Daigle would find a place on there quite easily.
January 18, 200521 yr I think Joe Thurston is a possibility he was designated for assignment by the dodgers.
January 18, 200521 yr QUOTE(bulokis @ Jan 19, 2005 -> 02:37 AM) I think Joe Thurston is a possibility he was designated for assignment by the dodgers. I can't really see much of a point with that, the backup infielder is going to have to play some SS, I don't think Thurston can do that. Plus we've got Bryant Nelson down at Charlotte even though he's a couple of years older. Pretty much, Thurston would be a poor man's Willie Harris if there's such a thing.
January 18, 200521 yr Interesting name, but I would imagine most of the NRI's are going to be IFers unless the Sox make another move. There are zero pitching spots up for grabs with the Sox, unless someone gets hurt.

He was supposed to be their can't miss, we will not include him in any trade, prospect. Has anyone seen him play? What is his downfall?
January 18, 200521 yr Joe Thurston... He was supposed to be their can't miss, we will not include him in any trade, prospect. Has anyone seen him play? What is his downfall? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> He doesn't walk and he strikes out alot. We should still take a flier on him considering our 2nd base situation. Here are Thurston's minor league numbers... http://www.sports-wired.com/players/profiles/p7244.asp Here's an ESPN.com rookie profile of Thurston from 2003... http://espn.go.com/mlb/spring2003/thurston.html Here's an ESPN.com question about Thurston from 2002... http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/columns/story?id=1380927
January 18, 200521 yr Going along with the thread, here are some guys who could be useful for minor league invites or contracts; Antonio Osuna Ryan Hankins (if he wants to return) Chin - Feng Chen (although we have a glut of outfielders already) Brian Boehringer Rich Aurilla Mark DeRosa Franklyn Gracesqui Cody Ransom (likely to resign with Giants though) Brian Sweeney Also Jim, I found this on Daigle a while back from Rotoworld; Diamondbacks designated RHP Casey Daigle for assignment. Unless a team really wants Jennie Finch hanging around in spring training -- she'd have to be a bigger draw than Garth Brooks -- Daigle will go unclaimed and remain with the Diamondbacks. January 18, 200521 yr QUOTE(JDsDirtySox @ Jan 19, 2005 -> 02:54 AM) Joe Thurston... He was supposed to be their can't miss, we will not include him in any trade, prospect. Has anyone seen him play? What is his downfall? That was 2 years ago. Now Antonio Perez has passed him and Thurston has gone backwards. Here were Rotoworld's thoughts; Dodgers designated second baseman Joe Thurston for assignment. Thurston has regressed the last couple of years and can no longer be viewed as a future regular. He's not worth the waiver claim. He hit .284 for Las Vegas in AAA, and I believe that's a real good hitter's park.
January 18, 200521 yr Thx for the Rotoworld tidbit, had not seen that. We'll have to wait and see. Cody Ransom, signed by Cubs, minor league deal.

Osuna is expected to sign with the Nationals.
January 18, 200521 yr Ok cool, I didn't hear about Ransom even though I knew the Scrubs inked Fox to a minor - league deal, who is a very useful reliever when his arm is healthy. I've heard the Osuna to Washington tidbits as well, but at least KW knows what the guy can do here, and he'd be worth bringing back to a minor league deal. You can never have enough good bullpen arms.
January 18, 200521 yr I wouldn't mind taking a look at DeRosa. A guy who can play 2nd, 3rd, SS, and a Corner OF would be a nice addition.
January 18, 200521 yr Sox roster is full I believe, so anyone they'd add would have to be on a minor league deal or someone would be waived. The other interesting name out there for a minor league invite is Roberto Hernandez, they may be interested in seeing what he's got left, if anything. Doesn't seem to be any room in the bullpen but Hernandez is definitely a guy Ozzie knows. No clue as to whether RH would accept a minor league deal at this point. For me the key factor is infield depth and starting pitching depth.
January 18, 200521 yr QUOTE(aboz56 @ Jan 18, 2005 -> 04:26 PM) If it brings Jennie Finch to the Cell at all, I'm all for it. Only if she's dressed like this: Holy crap, she's H-O-DOUBLE-T!!!

Jim, I think the idea behind it is a good one, however with the Sox 40 man roster in the situation it is, I just can't see them picking up a guy soley for corporate sponsorship reasons. I'm not too familiar with Daigle. I can't remember if I had heard his name before because I have read or heard someone say that he's a solid prospect or if its soley because her going out with Jennie Finch. However, the Sox still have at least one more guy to designate for assignment for the infielder they bring in and I think that seems to be a difficult enough task.
January 18, 200521 yr Imagine Jennie Finch and Lisa Durrgan at the Cell at the same time...the Cell would be the place to be with these two star attractions. We'll sell through the roof and will be able to spend more in the offseason. SIGN HIM KW!!
January 18, 200521 yr granted i am not too familiar with him so can somone give me and others a scouting rpt on him and why we should look at him. ok lets keep out the females out of this.
January 18, 200521 yr I'm just hoping we make a little run for Rich Aurilla...he could fill that void if we decide we don't want to bid for a MI. Also...Roberto Hernandez...welcome to Mike Jackson? Or no? Just have terrible memories.

January 18, 200521 yr QUOTE(JimH @ Jan 18, 2005 -> 11:34 AM) Jason, minor league invite does not count vs. the 40 man. Ya, but if he was designated for assignment, then you must place him on the 40 man roster, just like the Sox did when they grabbed Bobby Jenks.
January 18, 200521 yr If it brings Jennie Finch to the Cell at all, I'm all for it. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> The White Sox will have Lisa Dergan coming to Comiskey. Who needs Jennie Finch. Now if they could sign Kris Benson that means Anna Benson!!!!!
