January 19, 200521 yr http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/chc...s_chc&fext=.jsp Signing Scott Williamson, and resigned Patterson, Farsworth, and Barret. What an offseason for them!
January 19, 200521 yr #@$@#%&~!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They got Williamson for a song. He is just tremendous when he's right. Hell, even wrong this year, he was better than ever. Damnit, I was really hoping the Sox would get him. Worst f***ing outcome.

January 19, 200521 yr Williamson's elbow is really f***ed up, but the lastest Cub release did confirm that there is a 2006 option for $2 million. Not too bad of a deal right now, but we'll se how it works on in the long run. The same can be said with Ryan Dempster.
January 19, 200521 yr QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jan 19, 2005 -> 04:53 AM) Williamson won't even pitch this year. I keep reading that, best case scenario, he pitches at the end of 2005. The Cubs will pay him minimum if he does not pitch this season, w/ a $2 mil (team) option for 2006. That's a gamble that's EASILY worth it, imo. The Sox scored w/ Ellis Burks, why not give it a go w/ Lieber or Williamson?

I'll agree with you on that jackie that it was a decent gamble for the cubs because when scott is healthy he's a damn good pitcher. Who knows though if he'll ever be completely healthy again his elbow seems real messed up.

January 19, 200521 yr Willamson must be pretty messed up for the Cubs to get him so cheap. I doubt he has any real impact for them, this year atleast.
January 19, 200521 yr QUOTE(qwerty @ Jan 19, 2005 -> 05:38 AM) I believe this is already his second tommy john surgery. Eh, still worth a shot. Especially considering what he was still able to do while it was total junk. For the min? On the 60-day dl? I'd do it in a heartbeat, at least unless the team doctors tell me otherwise.

Who would we drop from the 40 man roster to sign a pitcher who won't throw until at least August, if ever? You can't sign a guy and place him on the 60 day DL so he has to have a roster spot with a ML contract, at least until spring training.
January 19, 200521 yr The thing that still makes me shake my head is that the Cubs paid Ryan Dempster to rehab an arm surgery, they're now paying Williamson to do the same, yet when Jon Lieber - who had a 20-win season for them already - got injured, they just said "OK, thanks, bye now, best o' luck to ya". I'm telling ya, it baffles me....

Well, at this point the Sox seem content w/ their 40-man, I'm not suggesting that they even considered signing him. But there are possibilities -- are Kevin Walker, Reynoso, Timo, or Borchard more valuable than Williamson will be, if only a year from now?
January 19, 200521 yr lets remember, who was the last reliever the cubs got who was good? <_ thats right latroy hawkins and he didnt live up to expectations> williamson will be the same story
January 20, 200521 yr lets remember that hawkins never was a good closer... and the cubs used him as a closer... if he gets back into that setup role he will be fine.
