whitesox91403
I know the guy is going to get paid a million this season. Can he just be waived to get his salary off the books? Personally, I like him. However, wouldn't it make more sense for The Sox to try and trade/waive him so Burke can be kept? Burke is a more versatile player that can play 3 positions. What is it that is keeping Davis on the roster besides salary obviously? His defense? The fact that he is a switch hitting catcher?

Under our current system if AJ got hurt then we would be stuck with a catching core of Burke and Davis. Not great but not the worst in baseball. If we trade Ben and AJ somehow got hurt then we would have a catching core of Burke and ??????. I don't know that kind of scares me a little. He is still young and can realistically improve. Why would they waive him, it's a critical position and for once they have quality depth. If Burke makes the team it will be due to his ability to play 3B.
The Critic
QUOTE(JimH @ Feb 14, 2005 -> 08:30 AM) If Burke makes the team it will be due to his ability to play 3B. And his bat off the bench. Can't release Davis - catching depth is extremely important.
WilliamTell
Yeah I don't want to see Davis get released. What happens if A.J. goes down, and we all know most catchers won't catch every game of the season.
southsider2k5
IN reality, how many better #2 catchers are there in baseball. Yeah I was uncomfortable with Ben as a starter, but as a back up, we are in much better shape than most teams are.
Punch and Judy Garland
Plus, given that the Sox have nobody on the immediate horizon at the catcher position, it's a good idea to have Davis around. If AJ leaves after 1 season or two, having Big Ben could be a nice stop gap. However, if he gets rid of his curly mullet then all bets are off. AddisonStSox
$1M is just about the league average for a backup catcher. Hell, look at what the crybabies from the Northside paid for their backup. For the first time in years, the catching position is a position of strength for the White Sox; let's not mess that up.
