February 26, 200521 yr One major advantage to the NY-Boston rivalry is the proximity of the two cities. They've always stayed in the same division, so they are guaranteed to meet a bunch of times every year. The Sox have switched divisions a couple times, to the West when MLB expanded to a divisional format, then to the Central, so their rivalry teams have changed. They'll have to find a new rivalry again in a few years, when Minny gets contracted.... Both rivalries are pretty intense, for sure, but since I dislike both the Spankees and the Red Cubs, I'll take the Sox-Twinks rivalry any day.
February 26, 200521 yr QUOTE(KWs OK for Me @ Feb 26, 2005 -> 12:19 AM) I have to agree that the Raiders and Chiefs definately deserve to be called one of the greatest rivalries. I went to a Chiefs Raiders game at Arrowhead, Chiefs fans rival Bears fans for best in the league. The atmosphere at that game was just intense, and as always, a battle. Yeah we hate the Raiders and the Raiders hate us. But I do have to admit I was at first a Raiders fan because I like Bo Jackson when I was really young. But then I wised up as I'd like to think and I've liked the Chiefs for the past 13 years.
February 27, 200521 yr It's ancient history to most but the Sox-Yankees from 1951-1964 was as intense as anything I've seen in my lifetime. Unfortunately, although the Sox were scrappy and competitive the results were all too often one sided. In any case, there was always a lot of excitement and drama in that era when those two teams matched up. Billy Pierce vs Whitey Ford was always a big deal. I still say that if both Chicago teams ever got their act together in the same year it would make those old New York subway series seem tame in comparison.
February 27, 200521 yr we would have a better city classic for a number of reasons. Unfortunately, number one is that everyone (present company exlcuded) is a cubs fan.
February 27, 200521 yr id like see how good this yankees/red sox rivalry is if there was a cap and they werent guranteed 100 win seasons every year
February 27, 200521 yr No way does our rivalry with the twins even compare to the Yanks-Bo Sox. The Cubs rivalry is closer in scale but we don't play them near as many times and like someone else said neither team has won s***.
February 27, 200521 yr QUOTE(soxhawks @ Feb 26, 2005 -> 08:03 PM) id like see how good this yankees/red sox rivalry is if there was a cap and they werent guranteed 100 win seasons every year It may increase. Now they always have "no big deal losing to them now, we'll beat them in the playoffs when it really counts." Imagine how it would be if only one could make the playoffs, or of both were going to miss the playoffs and all they had was beating up on each other?
February 27, 200521 yr QUOTE(Texsox @ Feb 27, 2005 -> 02:49 AM) It may increase. Now they always have "no big deal losing to them now, we'll beat them in the playoffs when it really counts." Imagine how it would be if only one could make the playoffs, or of both were going to miss the playoffs and all they had was beating up on each other? there is no way it would be more intense, so say the twins and royals are long time rivals, the royals suck now, do you think they would get more up for the indians and us then a team that will lose 100 times
February 27, 200521 yr QUOTE(Heads22 @ Feb 26, 2005 -> 11:27 PM) I think Dodgers-SF is near the top. Very true, fans get shot and killed over that one.
February 27, 200521 yr QUOTE(Texsox @ Feb 25, 2005 -> 09:17 AM) Could be because Boston and NY are two of the biggest cities in America and reasonably close to each other? Boston isn't really one of the biggest cities in America. It barely cracks the Top 20 in America, coming in at #20. Even cities such as Milwaukee, Indianapolis, and Memphis are bigger than Boston. But, as for sports rivalries go, NOTHING tops Bears-Crappers.
February 27, 200521 yr Here in NE Iowa and around here for the most part Vikes-Pack is bigger than Packers-Bears. I still gotta go with SF-LA.
February 28, 200521 yr thats only because of the recent dominance of the bears by the packers with Brett Favre...... I think are rivarlry with them is going to revive itself some when Favre finally leaves GB.... hopefully their next QB is an ass and easy to hate.
February 28, 200521 yr I used to wonder how the s*** talking went when Yankee and Red Sox fans got together, well I found out. About 5 years ago, I took a tour of Fenway Park. There were for 4 Yankee fans in my group who, contrary to popular belief, were well behaved. Near the end of the tour, one of the Red Sox people giving the tour made some kinda crack about the Yankees. One of the Yankee fans replied: 'You know it's funny, we've toured this whole park and I haven't see any World Series banners up anywhere'. The whole group broke up laughing. Yeah, some 'rivalry'.
