Mets announced the retirement of first baseman Andres Galarraga.

The 43-year-old Galarraga must have been told he wouldn't make the team. The Big Cat finishes his career stuck on 399 homers. A five-time All-Star, he hit .288/.347/.499 in 19 seasons.

"Matt Williams becomes partner in Diamondbacks"

http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_ylc=X3oD...ov=ap&type=lgns

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- Former Arizona third baseman Matt Williams announced Tuesday he is becoming a partner in the Diamondbacks and will invest $3 million in the club over the next 10 years.

Williams, who joined the expansion Diamondbacks in 1998, will own one-half of 1 percent of the team, paying $300,000 a year via a deferred investment that allows him to pay 10 percent each year. The commissioner's office approved Williams as a partner last week, a formality in the process.

The Nationals optioned RHP Jon Rauch and RHP Gary Majewski to Triple-A New Orleans.

Rauch really wishes he was out of options. The Nationals will keep only 11 pitchers, costing him his job. Joe Horgan and T.J. Tucker are being kept him over him.

Not long after Mike Venafro gave up three runs without retiring a batter, Kelly Wunsch struck out all three Orioles he faced today.

One of the two lefty specialists is expected to have a job on the Dodgers, at least until Brad Penny returns. If Wunsch wasn't already the clear favorite, he is now.

Wes Obermueller pitched in relief today and allowed two runs in three innings against the Cubs.

Perhaps a hint that the Brewers will go with Gary Glover as their fifth starter. Obermueller entered the day having allowed just one earned run in 15 innings, but he probably does belong in middle relief.

Royals optioned first baseman Ken Harvey to Triple-A Omaha.

We're not completely shocked that the Royals are going to go with Calvin Pickering over Harvey, but it is surprising GM Allard Baird stuck to his original plan of sending down the loser. Harvey certainly has nothing left to prove in the minors. He is what he is, and since he slaps lefties around pretty good, he is worthy of a spot on a major league roster. Expect Harvey to return to Kansas City during April or May. He still figures to have some value in AL-only leagues this season.

Is there any doubt now that Konerko should have been an All-Star last season over Ken Harvey? :headshake

Phillies released RHP Amaury Telemaco.

The Phillies couldn't find a way to fit both Telemaco and Terry Adams on the team. Telemaco, who had a 3.52 ERA in 15 1/3 innings, should be another team's 11th or 12th pitcher on Opening Day.

Giants released RHP Al Levine.

This should mean that the Giants will keep both Jesse Foppert and Tyler Walker, though Jeff Fassero could still be in the mix. Walker is a solid 12th pitcher, but the Giants would have been better off going with Levine, who had pitched nine scoreless innings. Expect a lot of teams to try to sign him prior to Opening Day.

Giants waived LHP Wayne Franklin for the purpose of giving him his unconditional release.

GM Brian Sabean did such a nice job with NRIs that the Giants entered spring training with about 15 relievers more worthy of roster spots than Franklin, who spent all of 2004 on the major league roster. He'll pitch in Triple-A in another organization.

Orioles acquired outfielder Ramon Nivar from the Rangers for LHP Matt Riley.

Better than losing Riley on waivers. Nivar was viewed as one of the Rangers' top prospects a year ago, but he hit just .264/.290/.374 for Triple-A Oklahoma. He helped himself a little with a nice winter ball season and by playing well in limited action this spring. Since he can play second and center field and hit for average, he should be a pretty good bench player. There's a chance he could end up as the Orioles' starting center fielder at some point.

"Flubs trade Ransom to Texas, reduce camp roster to 30"

http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/new...t=.jsp&c_id=chc

MESA, Ariz. -- The Chicago Cubs today announced that infielder Cody Ransom has been traded to the Texas Rangers in exchange for a player to be named later. Ransom signed a minor league contract with the Cubs January 5 and was a non-roster invitee to big league camp.

The Cubs placed Stephen Randolph on waivers for the purpose of giving him his unconditional release and reassigned Angel Echevarria and Calvin Murray to minor league camp. Will Ohman was optioned to Iowa (AAA). Joe Borowski was placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to March 25.

In addition, Scott Williamson has been added to the 40-man roster.

The camp roster now stands at 30 players. The positional breakdown of the players remaining in major league camp: 15 pitchers, seven infielders, six outfielders and two catchers.

Bobby Crosby left today's game after being hit on the left wrist by a pitch. X-rays are scheduled for tomorrow.

''I can move my finger and wrist, so that's a good sign,'' Crosby said. ''I'm just hoping it's not broken.'' If Crosby is going to miss some time, the A's will slide Mark Ellis over to shortstop and carry Marco Scutaro as a reserve.

"Red Sox trade Kim to Rockies

Boston acquires Johnson, Narveson, cash from Colorado"

http://chicago.whitesox.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb...t=.jsp&c_id=mlb

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- For a while, the Red Sox hoped that Byung-Hyun Kim would regain his velocity and effectiveness as a Major League pitcher. That still might be the case, but it will have to happen elsewhere.

After months of speculation, Sox general manager Theo Epstein officially unloaded Kim on Wednesday, dealing him to the Rockies for catcher Charles Johnson and minor league left-hander Chris Narveson.

However, Johnson won't play a game for the Red Sox. Upon making the transaction, the Sox designated Johnson for assignment and then released him. Johnson is expected to wind up with the Devil Rays by early next week.

The Red Sox picked up the bulk of Kim's $6 million salary while the Rockies will pay most of Johnson's salary.

So it looks like the Devil Rays will just pick up Charles Johnson now.

"Red Sox admit Kim was a mistake"

http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_ylc=X3oD...ov=ap&type=lgns

FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) -- The Boston Red Sox traded reliever Byung-Hyun Kim to the Colorado Rockies, calling the $10 million, two-year deal they gave him in 2004 ``a mistake.''

Kim was sent Wednesday to the Rockies for left-handed pitcher Chris Narveson, 23, who was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket, and catcher Charles Johnson, who was immediately designated for assignment and released.

As part of the trade, Colorado sent Boston about $2.6 million to equalize the salaries. Johnson is owed $9 million and Kim $6 million, part of a $10 million, two-year deal he signed before the 2004 season.

``We certainly made a mistake and I take responsibility for that,'' Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein said. ``It's just a mystery what happened to this guy.''

Kim, a 26-year-old sidearmer, was a major factor in Boston reaching the 2003 playoffs, but Epstein said Wednesday he should have let Kim get a one-year contract through arbitration rather than sign him to a two-year deal.

``I'm not so sure (success) would have happened to him in Boston,'' he said. ``He was crying for a change of scenery.''

Epstein said Kim, when informed of the trade, apologized for not doing better.

Kim in Coors Field.  That's a scary thought.

Could it actually be possible they could have a worse closer numbers wise than what Shawn Chacon did last season? :o

Dallas McPherson - Third Baseman

Angels optioned third baseman Dallas McPherson and RHP Chris Bootcheck to Triple-A Salt Lake.

Even though McPherson has recovered from his back problem, the Angels are going to stick him in Triple-A for the first 10 days of the season so he can get extra at-bats. Robb Quinlan will play third base until McPherson returns in mid-April.
