The Mets have a lot of interest in Billy Koch, who was released by the Blue Jays yesterday.

Mets pitching caoch Rick Peterson worked with Koch with the A's in 2002. He'll likely be offered a minor league contract.

When your bullpen looks like this, you need all of the help that you can get.

The Mets have a terrific offense and a pretty good starting staff, but that bullpen is enough to disqualify them from postseason contention right now.

Is there a dumber organization in baseball given the amount of money they spend? I can't think of any outside of maybe the Rangers.

'Are they(the Mets) really that stupid?'

Yes

The situation is very tantalizing to a pitching coach. Somewhere in that person is the Rolaids Relief Pitcher of the Year. Just unlock it and you are a genius. I can see why pitching coaches would want to work with him. Plus, he's a solid citizen.

Rick Peterson is good, but he's not Leo Mazzone good.

If that were the case, teams would have been lining up to get Antonio Alfonseca too.

RRPotY is figured out statistically...and I am almost positive wins are counted in that formula. Billy won 11 games in 02. He also had a WHIP of 1.27, which is decent, but nothing spectacular, and his BB/9 of 4.4 was nothing to write home about. His HR/9 was 0.67 though, which is actually very solid(especially when you consider that it was 1.7 with us the next year)

They would like to turn him around...but I don't think he is fixable, right now. He is just all over.

That was a weak year for the rolaids relief winner in the al.

id think they would qualify as the worse franchise given the knowledge that the rangers actually realized their mistakes after chan ho and A-Rod and have taken the build from within aproach to making their team and being successful at it.

Back to the Koch issue though i dont see how its a bad signing really, he was once a successful pitcher and maybe he might regain his velocity and if not its only a minor league contract not going to hurt anyone.

Koch's ERA with the Marlins was in the 3's

Maybe pitching for another National League club would help him out?

I hope that they sign him and he turns it around

What's the risk? Minor league deal + the last pitching coach to see him right. Not that he'll do anything, but I'd try it too.

Haha wow, that's insane. Good luck to Billy if he goes there.

What's insane about giving someone a minor league deal? Does it really have an affect on the payroll or the other clubs?

If he can turn it around, it seems like a low risk/high benefit possibility for the Mets.

Low risk- high reward. Maybe this guy could correct him. It's only a minor league deal. Calm down guys.

He did have a 3.51 era but he still had a 1.60 whip and his average, obp, slg, and ops were better than they where he but not a significant amount. I don't know how many times his ass got saved while he was there, mostly by benitez.

have fun NY
