Phil Nevin doesn't rate Sox

Featured Replies

From the Southtown;

It seems the team with the best record in the major leagues still has not impressed everyone.

After the White Sox beat San Diego on Friday night, Padres first baseman Phil Nevin was asked by a San Diego reporter whether facing the red-hot South Siders provided a good measuring stick for the Padres.

"We don't use this as a measuring point," Nevin said. "At our best, we've swept teams like Atlanta, Florida, won three of four in St. Louis. I don't think (the Sox are) better than those teams."

Frank also doesn't know if this year's team is better than the 93 one;

"It's all about pitching," Thomas said. "I mean, these guys get along well, but it's still all about pitching. If you're keeping the opposition to two or three runs a night ... and then it's great how we score runs. It's a different guy every night.

"It's definitely a great team, but I'm not going to say it's better than our '93 team (which won the AL West title). Our '93 team can beat anybody. We just fell a little short in Toronto. It just so happened that they were a great team that year, too."

Do you think Nevin considers the Indians one of the best teams, because they just got swept by them before we came to San Diego. Does it matter what he thinks of us or anyone else for that case, as long as this team keeps winning, people will have to accept the fact that we are a good team.

Nevin's probably still cooling off from the tag play on Friday and getting called out on strikes last night. ;)

Nevin's must have pics of the umps. He yelled at on Fri night did'nt get thrown out.Sat argued balls and strikes and didnt get throw out! :huh

After he b****ed at Laz Diaz last night I noticed the zone getting smaller for Mark.

I think you need to take the comments of Thomas in the context of how they were given: Comparing teams from 1993 and 2005 really doesn't mean anything much because you are playing and competing against teams this season and all you have to do is beat them, not the competition from 1993. We are doing that!

Nevin on the other hand doesn't know anything about this team since he plays in the NL and his comments are not worth any real concern or even legitimacy since we only play then 3 times. We have a 1-1 record against another 1st place team and one left to play. That's all and nothing more. We can compete against anyone and have shown that.

Based on the limited sample size that Nevin has seen, I really can't blame him for saying that. If you only saw the Sox twice this year and one of the games was last night's, you'd think they suck.

Nice to see Frank is back for a week and is already dissing this team.  Seriously, why can't he just shut up?

He's not dissing this team. He's acknowledging we're a good team, but not quite as great as the '93 team. If you disagree, maybe our team should just go prove that they are better.

Or maybe Frank shouldn't even say a word about it. You think the other players wanna hear this guy, who hasn't been with the club 2 weeks this year, say that they're no better than a team that didn't win the WS?

After all the talk that Thomas was going to ruin the chemistry of this team, he's making the case against him easier by saying something this stupid.

Nevin's comments are beyond stupid... If his only example was the cardinals than he might have a point but the braves and marlins? hardly above .500

I would've prefered Frank to not say anything either. But as of now I'm going to have to agree with him. Hopefully this team can go farther though.

It looks to me like a reporter threw loaded questions at Nevin and Thomas.

What were they supposed to say to those questions that would keep them out of the paper somewhere and off of bulletin boards?

Most everyone else seems to be able to handle it... You would think especially Thomas would know better. Heck the words "no comment" always work.

Actually they tell you in Media Relations classes never to say "no comment." It don't look good and the press will then make up what ever they want. They might of in this case anyway.
