July 27, 200520 yr Saw it as well. He is down on the mound and not moving. Everyone is quiet, including the announcers. Scary.
July 27, 200520 yr Replay looked like it hit him near the temple. He was out before he hit the ground. He was breathing but seemed to be out as they stretchered him off. This is the thing you fear as a pitcher and just a very distubring sight. Edited July 27, 200520 yr by Brian
July 27, 200520 yr QUOTE(rangercal @ Jul 27, 2005 -> 12:21 AM) any updates? I saw that live. he barely moved after he was attended to for a while and opeend his eyes for a second. Very scary
July 27, 200520 yr QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Jul 26, 2005 -> 06:31 PM) You would have to think this puts Boston in a little bit more a need for a pitcher now..................... paging Burrnet??/ then we get wagner riiiiight
July 27, 200520 yr Wow, I didn't see this or anything, but it sounds pretty bad. I hope he's alright. That just sounds like something that'll put a guy on the shelf for at least a month or so.
July 27, 200520 yr I saw the story on Real Sports about guys getting drilled with balls off aluminum bats. A couple guys died. This is very scary. Hopefully, he will be alright. One kid who died was conscious(sp?) when he went to the hospital and passed later on. Edited July 27, 200520 yr by Dick Allen
July 27, 200520 yr f***... just reading this gives me goose bumps. I haven't heard anything concerning Clement from the TV so I just found out. Hope Clement is all right.
July 27, 200520 yr Wasn't Bryce Florie on the Red Sox when he got drilled in the face with a liner? His career was basically over after the incident.
July 27, 200520 yr QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 26, 2005 -> 08:01 PM) Wasn't Bryce Florie on the Red Sox when he got drilled in the face with a liner? His career was basically over after the incident. Yep. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2117345 Five years ago, Red Sox pitcher Bryce Florie was hit in the right eye by a ball hit by Ryan Thompson of the New York Yankees. The line drive broke several bones in Florie's face and left his vision impaired. The right-hander tried to come back with Boston the next season but didn't last long and was out of the major leagues by the end of the season. He has not been back since.
July 27, 200520 yr Red Sox's Clement injured by line drive FRED GOODALL Associated Press ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Boston Red Sox pitcher Matt Clement was hit in the right side of the head by Carl Crawford's line drive Tuesday night and carried from the field on a stretcher. Clement could be seen blinking his eyes when he was placed on the stretcher, and the Red Sox said he was conscious and alert as he was taken to the Bayfront Medical Center near Tropicana Field for further evaluation. "He had some numbness throughout the site where he got hit behind the right ear," said Lt. Rick Feinberg of the St. Petersburg Fire-Rescue. The hospital did not immediately comment on Clement's condition. After he was hit, Clement remained on the ground and barely moved for about five minutes before he was lifted onto the stretcher and immobilized with a neck brace. Replays showed the force of Crawford's liner knocked the All-Star pitcher completely off his feet. The ball caromed off the back of Clement's head, just behind his right ear, into short left field for an RBI single in the third inning. Concerned teammates gathered around the fallen pitcher as medical personnel attended to him on the mound. The crowd cheered as he was carried off, but his arms remained strapped across his chest.
July 27, 200520 yr When I saw this, I about threw up. Can you imagine being his family and seeing this on tv? I hope he's ok.
July 27, 200520 yr per espn: bos team doc said that cat scans were negative, he never lost consciousness, was aware of surroundings, will be in hospital overnight for observation and reevaluated in the morning...

July 27, 200520 yr Wow. You have to hope it's something as "simple" as a concussion and after a night or two of rest he'll bounce back. This is the number one guy I wanted this off-season. Thoughts and prayers go out to the family.
July 27, 200520 yr QUOTE(Goldmember @ Jul 26, 2005 -> 10:04 PM) per espn: bos team doc said that cat scans were negative, he never lost consciousness, was aware of surroundings, will be in hospital overnight for observation and reevaluated in the morning... That's good to hear, but considering Hafner is still out after getting hit by Muehrle, Clement may be on the shelf for a while. He got drilled.
July 27, 200520 yr Once he comes back, it'll be interesting to see how he reacts mentally. I heard someone on ESPN ( can't remember who ) talking about a pitcher who got hit with a line drive ( again, can't remember who.....it was 4:15 in the morning when I saw it, okaaaaaaaay???? ), but he said the guy would visibly flinch when he released a pitch after that. Clement will be shaky on hits up the middle, that's a given. Glad to see that Clement didn't get seriously hurt, and I hope he does make a full recovery, both physically and mentally.
