The Phillies are one of the teams trying to get Baez, and the reason is they believe they can trade closer Billy Wagner for a starting pitcher. Both the Red Sox and White Sox have indicated to Philadelphia they might be interested in sending A.J. Burnett there in exchange for Wagner if they could get Burnett from the Marlins

If thats the case, then KW needs to see if this can work out. McCarthy & Marte for Burnett, Burnett for Wagner. Surely not as simple as that but if anybody could make the deal, Kenny could get it done.

I'd rather have Burnett, but considering that we might not be able to sign him to an extension, this might not be a bad idea if we can't. Can anyone tell me Wagner's contract status?

If this is the case then I'd rather have Burnett, simply because I believe that our starting pitching needs more help than our bullpen. That's JMO though and I can see why people would want Wagner instead.

I know this trade would be for the here and now, but would this hurt Kenny's relationship with the Florida GM? He seems to have good working relationships with most so I'm not sure if this would be something he would risk. It's a small risk for big gain IMO but I would still think its a factor.

That's something I thought of and that's a very good point. To be honest I wouldn't expect Kenny to pull something like that but like you said the reward is very high.

Philly has made that clear for weeks. There's no way FLM won't know.

Which is why I think any deal for Burnett is contingent upon the team trading for him being able to sign him for at least next year. Not just for the team's sake but the Marlin's as well.

Like I said, Kenny wants to win this now. If he has a good feeling that this would push us over the edge (maybe a different phrase would be more appropriate) then he would pull it off. I would have a feeling that if Florida had any inkling that we might move Burnett to Philly they would require that Lowell be included in the deal.

That's great freaking news! I don't want Burnett, but if he lands up Wagner I'm all for it.

Everything makes sense. I didn't think Burnett would improve the team much, but I believe Wagner would be absolutely huge for the Sox and the bullpen. Shifting Hermanson to set-up makes the Sox bullpen scary good.

Let me rephrase that, on Pro Sports Daily, it says kenny has been calling all week, and they told him they aren't interested in trading him. They believe they are still in it.

But if they are proposed the right trade, there is always room for discussion. I would never write anything off this week of the year.

Damaso Marte is signed through next season for 2.5M and he has a team option for both '07 and '08 each worth 3M. So he's protected through the next 3 seasons.
