I've got a waiver question.

Since we are last in line, having the best record, are we completely unable to block any waiver trade moves consumated by teams with lesser records?

If so, this concerns me.  I'm not worried about Huff and Baez, since LaMar isn't getting more than he just turned down.  But I wonder about Guardado, who I would still like to see on the Sox, but who would definitely get claimed before we could get to him.

Who knows the answer?

Only national league teams. If an American league team put someone on waivers, the White Sox would be last in line in the AL, then it would go to the NL.

To those of you with GM type minds, think this stuff out. Let's take an example of Guardado. The Mariner's try and run him through waivers. If you are Boston, do you claim him? I'm thinking that if that happens, the M's revoke the waivers. When that happens, Boston cannot trade for EG since he hasn't passed through waivers. If they place that claim, they handcuff themselves.

It seems to me that the only time you make a claim, is when you:

A. Want to block a specific player from going to a specific team.

B. Expect the player to be allowed to go through, so therefore you pick up his contract.

I'd love to hear some insight from you guys on this.

If you make a claim on a player, you are allowed to negotiate a trade for that player.

Unless the team that placed the player on waivers pulls him off waivers the second you claim him.

Right, but having exclusive rights to negotiate a trade would be a reason to place a claim on a player.

I just listened to Steve Phillips explain it all on the ESPN replay of the Sox-O's game. I must have not been paying attention to the chatter during that portion of the game, the first time around.

Just in case anyone cares I got a theory that the Sox traded for Griffey and that Reds ownership killed the deal. :o

Is this a theory, or is there something you know that we don't?

Just a theory. First there's this from whitesox.com I believe: General manager Ken Williams said the Sox were close to landing "something inpactful" that was killed by an opposing team's ownership group. Next, Griffey didn't play today and he owns Woody Williams so it kind of seems odd for him to have an off day. Then there's the fact that I could see the Reds wanting to hang onto Jr bad contract or not because of his resurgence and the fact that if they traded him for a not so hot package it'd be bad pr. JR said he's willing to take on anything and taking on most of Jr's contract would have meant that Kenny would have been able to hang onto most of our top spects while acquiring a difference maker, seems like something he'd do.

So anyways, just a theory I came up with, rip into me if you want. :)

You're an idiot ;)

Even though I have confirmed your theory as being fact via telepathy.

There's some logic there, but your pulling this out of left field. Not bad, though.

Ha, yeah it's definitely out of left field. I just saw that quote from kenny and was thinking about everything and I just kind of came up with that, made a ton of sense to me.

Just for the record, Griffey is 13-for-31 with five homers off Williams in his career.

Technically, he pulled it out of center field. ;)

I read somewhere that the sox were exploring a trade for Dmitri Young before the deadline. Looking at his career numbers, he's done very, very well vs possible playoff opponents like LAA, Minn, Bos. Oak and NYY. With his being a FA at the end of the yr, and making $8 mill, he could get through to the sox

Howard and Kotchman won't clear waivers, that's just dumb.

Overbay would be a huge coup, if he was able to slide through waivers to some team.

I was bout to say, Ryan Howard...sometimes I think I could do a better job than ESPN.

No thanks. Philly can suffer with the gigantic f***ing contract they gave him. I hope Howard enjoys playing the OF.

Haha, that'll be a sight to see.

Here are two other names of guys who'd have a pretty easy time getting through waivers, due to their contracts in '06: Ray Durham and Raul Ibanez

I bet SF would pick up more than half of Ray's 2006 $7 mill salary. Putting him at Dh and giving Iguchi some time off at 2b wouldn't be the worst thing to get Ray's avg. and OBP in the lineup

Ibanez would probably clear waivers, as he's basically a DH at this point. The Yanks and Boston wouldn't need him. Without the big power, Sea. having Ibanez at DH at $4.42 mill in '06 would seem to be excessive. Though on the sox, his avg. OBP and doubles would be a great fit. Esp as his hits RHP very well.

SF might be relunctant to trade anybody since they want to be a contender with a healthy Bonds....We'll have to see on that one, but I wouldn't rule it out.

Ibanez sounds like a decent fit. He's quietly having a nice season, and isn't overly expensive. Does he play the field at all anymore ?

beck72 good call on Ibanez, he would fit in nicely giving us some pop in the lineup.

Guys who are likely to sail through waivers: Dmitri Young, Sidney Ponson, Odalis Perez

Perez I would claim if I were KW. I would have no problem with grabbing Perez and sending Contreras through waivers. Only a 1.5 mil increase in payroll there and gives us the extra lefty we need.

He has played the field in 20 games this year (15 in LF). He just didn't fit in the field with Sexson at 1B, Ichiro, Reed, and Winn in OF. Now Winn has been traded, maybe he would see more time in OF, but who knows with that team. I would like him to come here though, I think he'd be a nice fit. .299, 15, 63 is nice.
