Sox's search could head North

WSCR won't care what most of us have to say...since the majority of us fall under they're target market of ages 25-44 which they are convinced all love Mike North... :rolly

I never imagined the switch would be this negative, but on the other hand, as I said in my previous post, I am not suprised.

I don't care what demographic they are trying to attract, Mike North would be an absolute travesty.

Oft considered a second-rate sports station in Chicago anyway, why in the world would Score start off their relationship with White Sox broadcasting on this note? It just doesn't make a lick of sense. Do they not understand Rooney's talent and all he brings with him to the booth? Do they not understand the shrivel of White Sox tradition we fans are hanging on to? Or, do they simply look at the bottom line and throw everything else out the window?

It is really a very tragic turn of events. As for Kalapse, there are many (present company not included) that find our belov'ed Ken "The Hawk" Harrelson "unlistenable." For man, his catch-phrases, homer-tendencies, massive ego, etc. are just too much and for these reasons, they tune into the #1 broadcasting duo in the AL even when they are by a television set. Yes, it's THAT important.

Mike North and Farmio on the radio at the same time? GMAFB

Farmio loves to hear his own voice and now we would have the sultan of self promotion Mike North on there. I predict that North and Farmio come to blows during ST over who gets to hog the mike more.

I would give two s***s to hear about North's wife, dog, friends, politcal cohorts, dog again, then the wife telling everyone how much she loves him over and over again, the dog again, and then his love for his wife. When I turn the dial to listen to the ball game I want to hear the score and the play by play. Maybe some banter about baseball, but not anything that Mike North has to offer.

Norths dog which will become the new mascot of white sox baseball.

This would go up there with the Dennis Miller on MNF debacle.

You know, I was all for the switch to 670 due to having resided in Wisconsin up until recently. Too many nights, even in Lake Geneva, AM 1000 came in like crap and the station would fade out in the middle of a Sox or Bulls game. The idea of a stronger signal just makes way to much sense. However, when this thing was finalized, my first thought was, implode the station. Get rid of all those jackasses. Because, I feared s*** like this. This is becoming like a nightmare, for crissakes.

On that note, North and Farmer could have a striking resemblance to John Madden and Pat Summerall going off on targents and forgetting the game. Their irrelevance was at an all time high in the 2002 Superbowl between the Rams and Pats. Much like a child with attention deficit disorder, North lacks focus. During the game he would go all over the place to further his agenda.

Say No to North

I live south of chitown and when the u broadcasts I listen to the game on mlb.com. I can get 670 loud and clear here. If North was on next year I would have to buy mlb .com radio again so I could listen to our oppponents commentary rather than listening to him :

Radio is gonna suck without Rooney sorry simple as that!

Radio is gonna suck without Rooney sorry simple as that!

I half-agree.

Let me start by saying that I think Rooney was and still is terrific, and he will be missed. However, there are many sportscasters who could do a credible job as the new Sox play-by-play man. Problem is, the Sox aren't looking for a credible PBP guy, they already handed that slot to the subpar Ed Farmer.

Now the task at hand is to find a more-than-credible color analyst to attempt to carry Sleepy Ed to a decent broadcast. THIS is a much more difficult task. Most color guys are there to add a line here and there, and hopefully enhance the listener's knowledge and enjoyment of the broadcast. But all too often, the color person ends up being a former player who may or may not be any good. IMO, Farmer was passable but not exceptional at this role.

Torborg would be light years better than North, and he may even be good enough to make Farmer listenable. North would spark a mass exodus from 670, much like he did with their morning audience.

Why he is so beloved at that station is beyond me. Expectations are low there, I guess.

As if things couldn't get any worse-now the score is getting positive hype from the Trib in adding Mike North to the booth:

Forget Mike North.

That's a joke.

Get somebody who knows the gamel

I can't imagine Farmer tolerating Mike North for a whole season.

That won't happen.

No way.

It is a tragic turn of events. Although Jim H is entirely correct about the business dynamics of the situation the Sox management could, if they cared, let it be known that this guy does not belong in their radio booth. How many times can this franchise bumble and stumble?

North, stay the f*** away from my Sox!!! I wish you werent even on the radio, let alone broadcaster for my favorite team!!!

Score widens palette in search of Sox color

September 16, 2005

BY ROBERT FEDER SUN-TIMES COLUMNIST

When the program director of sports/talk WSCR-AM (670) said he'd try to "think out of the box" in his search for a new White Sox radio color analyst, he meant it.

On Thursday, Mitch Rosen met with Sun-Times columnist Richard Roeper to pitch him on joining Ed Farmer in the broadcast booth when the Sox move to the Score next season.

Roeper, an Emmy Award-winning broadcaster and star of the nationally syndicated movie-review show "Ebert & Roeper" (along with fellow Sun-Timesman Roger Ebert), also happens to be a south suburban native and a knowledgeable, lifelong Sox fan.

Although both agreed Roeper's workload precludes doing a full season's 162 games, he and Rosen discussed other roles, such as occasional appearances as a third man in the booth or pre-game and post-game duties.

The vacancy at the Infinity Broadcasting outlet was created by Farmer's move up to replace the outgoing John Rooney.

Rosen confirmed Thursday that he also has reached out to former manager Jeff Torborg and ex-players Steve Lyons and John Cangelosi about the job.

Also in the running is Mike North, the Score's outspoken morning personality, who met Thursday with Sox execs Brooks Boyer and Bob Grim. The meeting was described as cordial and positive.

As tantalizing as the prospect may be, North remains, by all accounts, an extreme long shot.

This is turning into comedy hour.

I fancied myself as a pretty good announcer back in the day, thank you very much :)

The Manchester High School Squires, and the Manchester College Lady Spartans liked me well enough anyway :bang
