October 22, 200520 yr 30 year olds who have been playing professional ball for 9 years should not be eligable for Rookie of the year. Robinson Cano or Huston Street should win it.
October 22, 200520 yr QUOTE(Kalapse @ Oct 21, 2005 -> 08:31 PM) 30 year olds who have been playing professional ball for 9 years should not be eligable for Rookie of the year. Robinson Cano or Huston Street should win it. Agree 100%. You can't consider pro-ball in another country a form of the minor league.

Robinson Cano or Huston Street should win it. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I disagree. Scott Podsednik was the runner-up for the RotY in 2003 and had played 9 years in the minor leagues before that. The MLB's minor leagues are probably just as challenging as Japanese baseball. What's the difference? Edited October 22, 200520 yr by SSH2005

October 22, 200520 yr Japan >> MLB minors. It's about pro ball, Japan is pro the minors are not. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Just because it's called "pro ball" doesn't mean that there's better talent in Japan than in the MLB minors. Come on now. Tuffy Rhodes hits 40 to 50+ homers every season in Japan. I guarantee you he wouldn't do that in the MLB minors. Edited October 22, 200520 yr by SSH2005
October 22, 200520 yr I've heard from smart people that Japan is AAAA. Obviously, there have been great players there that you will not find in the minors but there are abviously a large group of guys with great fundamentals but not great talent.
October 22, 200520 yr BTW, we need to get rid of activist voters. If Japanese players shouldn't be rookies, change the f'n rule. Otherwise, go by the rules at hand-in which case Iguchi may be the man and Matsui definitely should have
October 22, 200520 yr Japan is better than AAA. They've been called AAAA before and when someone's had success over in Japan, they should win the Rookie of the Year in America.
October 22, 200520 yr BTW, we need to get rid of activist voters. If Japanese players shouldn't be rookies, change the f'n rule. Otherwise, go by the rules at hand-in which case Iguchi may be the man and Matsui definitely should have <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Exactly. Ichiro won the RotY in 2001 but now Iguchi has no right to win one because he played in Japan? The rule didn't change so why do people think this?

October 22, 200520 yr Cano? The man who can't play defense or draw a walk? Huston yes. Cano no. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Don't forget the awesome .320 OBP. Jonny Gomes is far more deserving than Robinson Cano.
October 22, 200520 yr QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Oct 21, 2005 -> 10:12 PM) Don't forget the awesome .320 OBP. Jonny Gomes is far more deserving than Robinson Cano. Johnny Gomes - Devil Rays Robinson Cano - Yankees Cano will get more votes than Gomes, I gaurantee you that.

October 22, 200520 yr QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Oct 22, 2005 -> 01:12 PM) Don't forget the awesome .320 OBP. Jonny Gomes is far more deserving than Robinson Cano. I suggested Gomes about 4 months ago as a real good trade option. For some stupid reason, Tampa Bay had this kid stuck in AAA, when he had massive power numbers down there. Unfortunately they saw the light, and now he's a very good player for them. As for Cano, looking at his splits, he only had these at home, .252/.274/.378, while in away games he was quite amazing for a rookie, .335/.358/.525. That's a .883 OPS which would be 4th for all second baseman behind Utley (damn he had a good year), Roberts and Jeff Kent.
October 22, 200520 yr obp is overrated when talking about rookies because that tends to come with time, they shouldn't really be held to the same standard at least right away. I don't know who I pick. I'd probably go with Iguchi although Street was very good and Cano came up and did well at a time when the Yankees needed a spark. I don't feel that any of the four selections are unworthy.

October 22, 200520 yr He may have won it but IMHO he should never have even been eligible to be <{POST_SNAPBACK}> But you don't make the rules, the MLB does. Therefore, Iguchi is just as eligible for the RotY as Robinson Cano is. Edited October 22, 200520 yr by SSH2005
October 22, 200520 yr Didnt Ichiro win MVP that year 2? Thats probably why they gave it to him how can you best the best player in the AL but not the best rookie

October 22, 200520 yr I'll just add my 2 cents here even though it has been covered already. I am thinking the baseball writers, or whoever votes on Rookie of the Year, may want to see my opinion. If Ichiro can win Rookie of the Year then Tad Iguchi deserves every consideration. Japanese baseball may be a step higher than AAA, but it's not Major League. October 22, 200520 yr QUOTE(Kalapse @ Oct 21, 2005 -> 09:44 PM) Japan >> MLB minors. It's about pro ball, Japan is pro the minors are not. Pro ball is when the players get paid. They get paid in the minors.
