I doubt I can listen to Dan Patrick tomorrow for fear I might break my radio. Only good thing about Gammons reaction is he'll likely point out that the NYY pitching staff still has some questions, which is something that will be ignored by everyone else. The Josh Beckett trade bought some goodwill and glad tidings, but losing Damon to the Yankees is a devastating blow to the foundation of the Nation. The Yankees' concession was to pay Damon $13 million annually, which is high for a leadoff hitter and actually slightly above his original asking price of $12 million. redandwhite Posted December 21, 2005 Share Posted December 21, 2005 a buddy of mines take who took the words out of my mouth: For about half the life of Damon's contract, most Red Sox fans considered his $8.5M year contract to be an albatross. The amount of money the Yankees are going to pay is reckless. I just want to go on record as saying this is great news for the Red Sox in the long run. I think Damon will continue to be an above average centerfielder in the next year or two. Three years freom now, however, I expect the Yankees to be dealing with Bernie Williams II. Damon's range has been in decline over the past three years, he can't throw, and several offensive indicators suggest he won't be much better than average hitter as he enters his mid 30's, either. His offensive skill set will not be helped by playing half his games in the context of Yankee Stadium, either. This is also good news for the Sox because they get two of the Yankees' draft picks next year. New York's farm system is barren and it doesn't look like it will be getting better any time soon. Now it's time for the Red Sox to come up with a plan for centerfield. Obviously, this non-move is only as good as their Plan B. If they can get Reed for Arroyo or get Crisp from the Indians without giving up too much, this will be a good thing. If they spend the $10M they were offering Damon wisely, this could be an excellent series of events. We'll have to wait and see how it turns out.
