January 2, 200620 yr QUOTE(JimH @ Jan 2, 2006 -> 12:38 PM) Intangibles maybe, or a history of making tough plays? Jeter has been doing it a lot longer and Juan really just came into his own this year. Yep. I'll be the first to admit that Juan played incredibly well at SS this year. But he has to play at a high level for more than one season for me to put him in the same realm as Jeter.
January 2, 200620 yr Jeter makes a tough play every so often but his range is no where near Uribe's and his arm isnt as good either. In the AL alone Id say Tejada, Uribe, and Cabrera are all better... and a course A-Rod is too .
January 2, 200620 yr QUOTE(JimH @ Jan 2, 2006 -> 02:42 PM) I will go further, one of the 20 best all around SS of all time. I'm only 25, but from what I've seen out of him, I would have to agree with you. I saw about 15-20 yankee games last year, and he's really something special.
January 2, 200620 yr QUOTE(JimH @ Jan 2, 2006 -> 12:42 PM) I will go further, one of the 20 best all around SS of all time. But he sucks defensively. :rolly
January 2, 200620 yr QUOTE(WCSox @ Jan 2, 2006 -> 02:46 PM) But he sucks defensively. :rolly He does.. This year was the first year he was actually decent, but in past years, he's been one of the worst in the league. Just about any statistics will show you this, but stats the devil.
January 2, 200620 yr I don't understand why people would say Jeter is bad defensively. That, to me, is so counter to what I've seen watching him for 10 years. There may be certain elements of Uribe's game which when analyzed alone, are better. Arm, and at this juncture, range. Total package though? Jeter hands down.
January 2, 200620 yr QUOTE(Felix @ Jan 2, 2006 -> 12:48 PM) He does.. This year was the first year he was actually decent, but in past years, he's been one of the worst in the league. Just about any statistics will show you this, but stats the devil. Actually, he looked pretty good to me during all of those playoff games that took them to four WS titles.
January 2, 200620 yr QUOTE(JimH @ Jan 2, 2006 -> 12:50 PM) I don't understand why people would say Jeter is bad defensively. That, to me, is so counter to what I've seen watching him for 10 years. Because it's cool to be "alternative" and dislike anything that's popular. It's even cooler to dislike Yankees.
January 2, 200620 yr QUOTE(JimH @ Jan 2, 2006 -> 02:50 PM) I don't understand why people would say Jeter is bad defensively. That, to me, is so counter to what I've seen watching him for 10 years. Jeter doesn't have great range, but many people don't see this because of highlight reels. They see a play or two in which he's sitting on one side of the field and makes it look like an impossible play, when in reality, its a much easier plays for better shortstops. January 2, 200620 yr Jeter is a guy who averages 16 errors per year and usually plays in 150+ games at SS. His fielding % is actually better these past two years than before. Still don't understand why anyone would say he sucks defensively, and my eyes tell me completely the opposite these past 10 years too. There must be some stat I'm missing.
January 2, 200620 yr Jeter doesn't have great range, <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Does that equate to "he sucks" defensively? I don't know about that ...
January 2, 200620 yr I would say that Uribe has the slight edge on defense (arm/range) and Jeter has a huge edge on offense, but when you throw in salaries into the equation, Uribe is a much better value. Jeter seems to be slowing a bit and most of his highlights this year would have been routine plays for younger shortstops.
January 2, 200620 yr QUOTE(JimH @ Jan 2, 2006 -> 02:55 PM) Jeter is a guy who averages 16 errors per year and usually plays in 150+ games at SS. His fielding % is actually better these past two years than before. Still don't understand why anyone would say he sucks defensively, and my eyes tell me completely the opposite these past 10 years too. There must be some stat I'm missing. Fielding percentage is by far the worst stat to use when evaluating players. Compare Derek Jeter's and Ozzie Smith's FP. Do you really think Jeter is that good?
January 2, 200620 yr Jeter neither excels or sucks from a defensive standpoint. He is average to slightly above average. Uribe just blows him out of the water. It's not even funny.
January 2, 200620 yr QUOTE(JimH @ Jan 2, 2006 -> 02:56 PM) Does that equate to "he sucks" defensively? I don't know about that ... Yes, what good are you if you don't have any range?
January 2, 200620 yr QUOTE(Felix @ Jan 2, 2006 -> 03:09 PM) Yes, what good are you if you don't have any range? Your pitchers give up more hits and you get less errors.
January 2, 200620 yr QUOTE(WCSox @ Jan 2, 2006 -> 07:09 PM) I'm not sure what you mean by that last part, but you sure sound like an intelligent adult by using words like "f***ing" and "jerkoff." And you're a real bubbly personality as well. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black... :rolly Hey, maybe you would be better served giving pointers on brain surgery, rocket science, super duper advanced calculus, etc. You know, stuff like that. This baseball thing clearly ain't working out for you.
January 2, 200620 yr QUOTE(RME JICO @ Jan 2, 2006 -> 01:07 PM) Jeter seems to be slowing a bit and most of his highlights this year would have been routine plays for younger shortstops. That's not surprising, as he's 31 now. He'll probably to make the transition to 3B a few years from now. While Jeter has never been the most physically-skilled SS, he's certainly been one of the smartest and has delivered most when it mattered. Uribe was off-the-hook good for much of this past season. I'm not trying to take anything away from him. But I'd like to see him do it for a number of years before I say that he's better than Jeter. Again, JMO.
January 2, 200620 yr Uribe is a better defender then Jeter there is no doubt about that in my mind. That being said Jeter is still a solid defender and while Jeter may be a little overrated in general, he is so underrated on this board it's ridiculous.
January 2, 200620 yr QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jan 2, 2006 -> 03:18 PM) Uribe is a better defender then Jeter there is no doubt about that in my mind. That being said Jeter is still a solid defender and while Jeter may be a little overrated in general, he is so underrated on this board it's ridiculous. I'll agree, but it's just backlash from just how overly-glorified he is. Personally, I like hearing the "intangibles" argument. Can't have a jeter discussion without it.
January 2, 200620 yr QUOTE(hammerhead johnson @ Jan 2, 2006 -> 01:16 PM) Hey, maybe you would be better served giving pointers on brain surgery, rocket science, super duper advanced calculus, etc. You know, stuff like that. This baseball thing clearly ain't working out for you. Sorry, but I won't dignify that with a response. Have a nice life. :headshake
January 2, 200620 yr Jeter is the better all around hitter. He also operates under a microscope in NY which makes his accomplishments more impressive. Uribe is a good SS. He just doesn't have the baseball IQ of a player like Jeter.
January 2, 200620 yr QUOTE(WCSox @ Jan 2, 2006 -> 10:37 AM) You're mastery of the English language is very impressive. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> From another thread; QUOTE(quickman @ Jan 2, 2006 -> 11:40 AM) And yes you can call me a dinosaur compared to all the teenagers who know everything as they have there parents pay for everything. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> QUOTE(WCSox @ Jan 2, 2006 -> 11:44 AM) Couldn't have said it better myself... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> You claim you "couldn't have said it better" even though quickman started a sentence with "And," and also used "there" instead of "their." You shouldn't be jumping on anyone else's grammar.
January 2, 200620 yr QUOTE(Felix @ Jan 2, 2006 -> 01:52 PM) Jeter doesn't have great range, but many people don't see this because of highlight reels. They see a play or two in which he's sitting on one side of the field and makes it look like an impossible play, when in reality, its a much easier plays for better shortstops. And let me guess you're making your defensive judgements on range factor? Defensive statistics do just about no justice in showing how good a player is defensively. You have to watch that player play or you'll have no idea.
January 2, 200620 yr QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Jan 2, 2006 -> 03:26 PM) From another thread; You claim you "couldn't have said it better" even though quickman started a sentence with "And," and also used "there" instead of "their." You shouldn't be jumping on anyone else's grammar. It's silly when arguments get petty...
