KC won a few games vs the Sox last year. You can't win them all. It is only April 8th. Now if we lose today I might be saying that.

Buehrle had his best season ever ERA-wise last year but he will obviously still be really good. Garcia didn't instill any confidence in me after barely touching 90 MPH last week. I still think Freddy will put up an ERA near 4 though. Contreras could go either way. I honestly don't expect another 3.50 ERA out of Garland and I don't think that's unreasonable at all. I do think that Vazquez will be better this season though.

 

Basically, our pitching staff was so good last season that it's hard to see them all repeating it. I still think they will be very good though.

You don't think Garcia will improve, and that he could just be going through a dead arm period? There were quite a few SP's in the same boat this week, such as Esteban Loaiza, he was only htting about 83MPH on the gun for the A's IIRC.

 

It looks like posters have already soured on Garland though. When we re-signed him, everyone thought it was great "Yay, JG's around for another 3 years!!!" Now after 1 bad outing, people think he automatically won't be as good.

 

And even if our pitching isn't as good, doesn't the increase in offensive production make up for that?

Well the way you worded it made it seem like you're saying because of these first four games the pitching is starting to regress. If you think that's going to happen then fine but don't say that it "has" already.

 

As far as your argument, the only pitcher I really see regressing is Garland but I don't think it's going to be that bad. Mark might be a tad bit worse but not too much. Freddy is going to put up around the same numbers and I expect JC and Vaz is obviously going to be much better then the Duke. Overall, I expect the starters as a whole to put up similar numbers as last.

I said that I think Garcia will still end up having an ERA near 4 at the end of the season. He put up a 3.87 ERA last season and owns a 3.96 career ERA. Not sure how I was being too pessimistic there.

I haven't soured on Garland because of one bad outing. I just don't see him repeating his amazing 3.50 ERA from last season. I see him putting up an ERA around 4 this season which is still very good.

Our bench is very good this season but the everyday lineup hasn't changed all THAT much. We replaced Rowand with Anderson which will hopefully be a wash or a little bit better (no way of knowing even though I agreed with the move). Yes, Thome is a MASSIVE improvement over Everett but that's still only one upgrade. The bottom of our order is still relatively weak with Pierzynski, Crede, Uribe, and Anderson -- four guys who have poor strike zone discipline.

I think a lot of people on here believe Jon is going to regress a bit, I don't think that is what ginger was referring to though.

Im just saying... if things dont work out this season rather than stuck in 2nd place like always... id rather pull a Marlins and build up a team. Although I fully expect things to work out but was just saying that because it seemed appropiate for this thread.

No, it's baseball. It happens every year where good teams blow "monster" leads to teams much worse. In October when we get to keep our trophy Bud isn't going to say "Sorry guys, on April 7th you blew a 6 run lead to the Royals, it was pathetic and embarrassing and because of this we are stripping your championship."
