May 13, 200619 yr http://chicago.whitesox.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb...t=.jsp&c_id=cws Notes: Contreras extends side session Montrero earns first promotion to big leagues By Scott Merkin / MLB.com MINNEAPOLIS -- The only leftover pain Jose Contreras might have felt on Friday stemmed from the after-effects of Thursday's epidural to alleviate the remaining discomfort brought about by the right-hander's bout of sciatica. Otherwise, Contreras said he felt almost completely healed and ready to return to action. Contreras then backed up his words with on-field actions, throwing a side session under the watchful eyes of pitching coach Don Cooper and athletic trainer Herm Schneider. Contreras was scheduled to throw somewhere around 20 pitches. But he felt so good after the first batch off the mound that he raised his total in the neighborhood of 40. When Contreras was finished throwing, Schneider almost didn't need to answer the media's questions concerning his condition. "He felt really good, and he really doesn't have any pain right now," said Schneider, who added that a dose of anti-inflammatories helped Contreras recuperate. A chief concern for Schneider and the White Sox is to make sure Contreras doesn't lose arm strength during his stint on the 15-day disabled list. Friday would have been Contreras' regular side day, following Wednesday's scheduled start, and the White Sox are trying to keep him as close to on schedule as possible. With Contreras' quick healing process, the White Sox could have rolled the dice and moved up their starters one day in the rotation to have Jon Garland pitch Wednesday instead of knuckleballer Charlie Haeger. With Thursday's cancellation, Contreras wouldn't have started until Monday afternoon's series finale at the Metrodome. Instead, Contreras is on schedule to bring his 5-0 record and Major League-best 1.41 ERA into U.S. Cellular Field Saturday against the Cubs, between Mark Buehrle and Freddy Garcia. With Garcia pitching on Monday against the Twins and on schedule to pitch next Saturday against the Cubs, Contreras could be held back until Sunday. But manager Ozzie Guillen wants Contreras back in action as soon as he's ready. "He would be in the second game against the Cubs," Guillen said. "If Jose feels fine, I want him to jump on the mound as soon as possible. "You see him moving around now and now he starts throwing. I have faith to get him back for the Cubs series."
May 13, 200619 yr Thats what I want to see. 100 percent healthy, no pushing up his starts, just get ready.
May 13, 200619 yr So what is the real skinny on his condition now? Is he completely healed in the full sense that the sciatica itself is gone or does he still have the sciatica but simply doesn't feel the pain from it anymore? In other words, is this a condition that will have to be addressed "for real" sometime in the future? SFF
May 13, 200619 yr QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ May 13, 2006 -> 11:48 AM) Awesome news! Let's hope that 44 year old back doesn't flare up again. 44? You are being too generous. 45+ easy
May 13, 200619 yr Good to hear. I didn't feel like this would be anything serious, with the way it was announced etc.

In other words, is this a condition that will have to be addressed "for real" sometime in the future? SFF Typically, the scatica is caused by some structure compressing the nerve. Once this compression is relieved the inflammation of the nerve needs to calm down and everything returns to normal. This looks to be the case. The only chances of return are either the epidural decreased the inflammation and it returns or the compression of the tissue (the disc it looks like in this case) returns. The only way to know for sure is to watch him and his mechancis (for compensation) closely. But by the reports it looks good. By the way is everyones elses writing center justified? May 13, 200619 yr I read a few days ago that Herm Schneider is planning on putting him on a core muscles strength program soon to strenghten his back so this wont happen again.

That sounds like a good idea and hopefully it works out. We need JC back as soon as possible.
