Ok, I see a lower ERA, but the WHIP is still not impressive, and he still walked a fair amount of guys and struck out nobody, and if numbers have been affected since recovering from 2003, what makes you think he could turn it around?

 

Based on getting past the numbers and watching him pitch, there was something there. Maybe the surgery altered that forever, but there is no harm in giving him an incentive laced contract and bringing him to camp.

All that he did last year was use the Joe Mays blueprint on how to shutdown the sox post ASB. Locate a fastball low and away, and then throw some changes and breaking pitches out of the strikezone low and in the dirt. Many a bad pitcher has used this blueprint to shut down our freeswinging team. It was more of the approach of our hitters than the effectiveness of Hernandez.

 

That being said, if you can sign him to a minor league deal he gives you some insurance at AAA.

Jenks is a young guy blessed with a 101 mph fastball when we picked him up. That is a low risk reward. Does Hernandez have the same toolkit or upside as Jenks, that would be a negatory ghostrider, the pattern is full.

How long are we going to argue about this? Odds are that the Sox don't give it a thought. If they do, odds are that he doesn't make the team.

Actually there is. He could be the 2006 Bonne Logan or 2004 Mike Jackson where he has an impressive spring, and stinks it up when the games start counting.

 

Gosox05, the comparison to Jenks isn't good enough. Hernandez has nowhere near the stuff that Jenks does. Bobby has top of the rotation stuff, not Hernandez like it was previously (incorrectly) mentioned.

You can sign him and he competes with the five guys in triple A for the long relief role at the big club. If he sucks, he can be released if you sign him to a minor league contract. No risk, maybe some reward. He has always had flashes where he shows promise, then implodes. I think it is worth bringing him and taking a look.

I'm not close to excited about a guy who never was for a season. Flashes are nice, but at his age, sign him to help down on the farm(s), but if he sniffs the 25-man for an extended stint, we are probably in trouble.

We could have a starter have a horrible start and struggle to get his era under 5 all year, or we could have a starter completely pitch like crap all year, until the last couple months of the season.... Should we not bring back Vazquez and Garland too?

Hernandez signed a minor league deal with the Red Sox. He will make $655,000 if added to Boston's 40 man roster, with up to $1.5 million available in performance bonuses should he make the big league team.

Hernandez couldn't hold Garland's or Vazquez's jocks. They have a much better track record than him based on results and stuff.

I'd be surprised if he didn't make a start for the Red Sox this year - assuming he's pitching well in AAA - simply due to how injury prone/aged their starting rotation (or, specifically, Josh Beckett and Curt Schilling, along with Papelbon too, and Matt Clement if they decide he has the right to a spot in the rotation, which I don't think he does). And then he'll get sent back down again, or possibly put in the bullpen.
