The Rangers and goaltender Henrik Lundqvist have agreed on a new multi-year contract.

According to a Wednesday report in the New York Daily News, the deal is thought to be for six years, $39.5 million.

I would guess that means that Montoya will be available. He is young and from the area. They have another goalie in Hartford already.

It's hard for most to speak on the subject, including myself, but I think Crawford is pretty close to the level Montoya is. I have never seen Montoya play, and Crawford only a handful, but based on what I can gather, they are similar. Hawks should have other targets in mind, at least IMO.

I'd have to agree with Tony here.

Stats only comparison of the two:

Montoya turned 23 today and Crawford just turned 23 in December.

I think Montoya's a more highly rated prospect though than Crawford.

It's only because of Lundqvist / Weekes that he hasn't gotten an opportunity yet.

If the price was right I would certainly look at it, because if you aren't going to trade Khabibulin, someone will have replace him after the 09 season, most likely.

Why does it seem like I've been hearing Crawford's name for 10 years?

I was surprised to read that he's only 23 - I thought we'd been waiting for him for much longer.

First it was Leighton, then it was Anderson, now it's Crawford. That's not to say Crawford will suffer the same fate of the other two, but I'd worry about getting the defense set first before you try and figure out who the next 'franchise' goalie is. The Hawks are just about there and may not need anyone if Hjarmlsson is as good as they were advertising him before the season.

Goaltenders are tricky -- outside of the truly elite, it's tough to tell which ones are actually good and which ones are living off the defense that plays in front of them.

I'm clinging to the hope that the Emery deal goes through. I don't know if he's much better than Khabibulin, but I do know that any negatives he has are massively outweighed by losing the final year-and-a-half on Khabbi's contract.

EDIT: And to add on to Tony's post -- I can't speak about Montoya, but all season long Crawford has had to deal with shuffling of the guys in front of him, guys playing on those 'tryout' type contracts. All told, a .911 S% strikes me as being pretty damn good.

I've mentioned this earlier, but I think Montoya's value was super inflated because of his performance in the WJC. He beat Andre-Fleury (on a bizzare goal). Montoya's performance since that tournament has been pretty average.

I'd take him over Crawford, only because from what I've heard... Crawford doesn't use a butterfly style (he plays a stand up style), which most goalies do and people think he will be hard for him to succeed in the league.

Even before the Hawks got him, this was my question about Khabibulin.

Man Leighton...I thought that guy was going to be an awesome goalie. He was big and played the puck well. It seems like playing behind those bad bad Hawks teams killed his confidence and he never recovered. Another player I thought was going to be damn good was Sergei Krivokrasov, man that kid seemed to have all the skills but the Hawks had no idea how to use him since they were stuck in that "dump and chase" garbage system. Go figure the year they let him go he went to the Preds and became an all star and then pretty much disappeared after playing for a few other teams.

Norrena played absolutely horrible that period, Seabrook and Buff had s***ty goals.

I have a strange feeling that the hawks are going to go on a little roll here (4/5 wins).

Marty Havlat could make this team alot better if played at all like he gave a s***.

I was just going to say that the only real negative about that 1st period was Havlat's lazy, disinterested, sloppy play.

He really is playing like a guy who's either afraid out there or has quit on the team.

He just took a stupid penalty as well. At least he got on the scoresheet somehow.

He's playing disinterested... trying feather passes between defenders instead of using his skill to draw defenders to him.

No Excuses, he's a guy who could be a SUPERSTAR in the league.

DT needs to get Hossa...not only to help the team offensively but to help Havlat get interested again. They were close friends in Ottawa..so who knows. Won't happen of course but a guy can dream right?

I agree with what your saying, but Robert Lang was supposed to be the guy who made Marty "happy." They played with the Czech National team together and were friends?

Seriously, this guy needs to stop worry about being "happy" and start scoring goals, maybe when the Hawks are crazy popular in the city because they're winning will make Marty "happy".
