Why didnt KW just trade him for a low ranking A player and avoid the 4.5 million risk? This seems like a bonehead move...

I highly doubt someone claims him in 72 hours. Also, after thinking about this more, there's no way this is a prelude to a Roberts trade. If it was, we wouldn't have released Uribe. We would have just included him in the trade.

Because teams either wanted us to eat some of the $, or they wouldn't give up anyone we wanted. This way, if a team really wants him, they risk losing out on him if they don't claim him.

I'm just saying, it's far from a certainty. How would the Sox know that he'd be picked up, anyway? If there was interest in him, he would have been traded.

Fathom is correct. They have 72 hours to trade him or for another team to claim him. If they do so, that team will pay his entire salary. If no one claims him, Juan will become a FA and sign elsewhere for the league minimum. That amount $390k, will then be subtracted from the amount the White Sox are paying him, so they would pay him $4,110,000 rather than $4,500,000.

No, I beleive if the Sox release him, he gets the $4.5M plus anything he agrees to with another team. MLB contracts are guaranteed. The thing is, is that he becomes a free agent after the 72 hours and if there are 3 or 4 teams that want him they will drive up his price thus KW is forcing them to take him and his full salary before another team can claim him. Depending on the waiver order this could really benefit a team.....

Bruce Levine just shed some light on the deal. He has been put on out right waivers which means teams have 48 hours to claim him or the Sox just put him right back on there roster. The White Sox would be thrilled if someone would claim him to get rid of 5 million dollar contract.

There is no way he can make any different amount than what his contract is for- $4.5 million. The only thing that can change is who is paying that $4.5 million.

I've said this before and I'll say it again. If this team gave up perhaps its best young hitting/1b prospect to get Richar, gave Richar a couple months to start learning the big leagues, and then makes a deal for someone else who either blocks him for multiple years or that gives away Danny while his value is still low because he hasn't fully adapted to the big leagues, then basically we can throw all semblance of them having a plan out the window and admit they're scrambling and making silly mistakes.

That would be dumb. And I dont like Uribe. You are already paying him lots of money to play here. Whats the point of releasing him.
