Not true at all. Rain delays, a starter having a bad day, getting hit by a line drive. There are TONS of reasons that you may need a long man. Sometimes you want to burn a game so you can be at full strength next game. When you have relievers with a history of injuries, and your pen is full of specialists, you need someone to flat out eat innings. Is Masset the guy? No, but we need someone to do it.

i'm not against having a long-man in the pen, period, i just don't want it to be masset. because if you're relying on masset to be that long-man/spot starter, then the team is done already. i'd personally rather have broadway in that role, he looked pretty sharp in that last royals series last year

it's just that, if we're relying on a long-man this year because one of the 5 guys sucks and can't do the job, or if one of them gets injured, our season is over, whether it's masset or not, i just don't want the long-man to be masset

The only way to keep both Wasserman and Macdougal in the pen and also bring up Broadway would be to go with an 8 man bullpen and send down Quentin, Anderson, Ramirez, or Hall. And while we may not like Hall, I don't think sticking Anderson or Konerko or someone like that behind the plate when AJ needs a day off will be that effective.

 

It's a pitching pick 2 of Masset, MMac, Wasserman, Broadway, Sisco, Haeger, Ohka, and anyone else you want to name. There are 2 slots available amongst those guys. The other 5 are filled by Jenks, Logan, Thornton, Dotel, and Linebrink.

I hope his train goes from DL to charlotte. Quentin is going to mash and never go back down, and hopefully BA continues to play like a 4.5 tool ballplayer.

Logan pitched 2 perfect innings tonight . Might be a sign that a few of our 1 inning specialists might have to go longer without Masset.

Actually he's had a pretty good spring.

I think Wassermann is going to get it. Both are done pitching before opening day, so it just tells me they are trying to trade Masset. Thornton and MacDougal will be able to pitch a couple innings at a time. I also think Wassermann can go a couple innings when needed.

 

I can see Masset being given the opportunity to lose the job at the major league level, which he very well might do, at which point Wasserman gets called up.

By what measure? He's got a 6.52 ERA, and a 1.76 WHIP. Those are nearly identical to Masset's 7.06 ERA, 1.80 WHIP. Wassermann is at a 3.09 ERA and 0.77 WHIP.

I think it was sort of by the "our eyes" format, which saw him have an abjectly terrible start, but pick it up in the last couple weeks. Considering how hard it is to come up with "bi-weekly spring training splits" or something ridiculous like that, it's hard to make that argument, but by all accounts, his first week or two were by far his worst, and he did significantly improve in the last couple.

Given the lack of depth in the pitching staff, I would keep Masset for at least the first month of the season. Maybe he surprises, but even if he stinks, he'll probably only be used in games that are out of hand. He's really the only guy in our bullpen who can do this. If we do need an extra arm after the first month of the season, and Masset isn't getting the job done, then I think we make a move.

I thought his first couple of weeks were good but his only 5 starts were god awful! I'm pretty sure they mentioned it in the Sun-times today as well how he was only good because he was facing ghosts in the batters box.

Masset hasnt even been solid at AAA ever. Even if he's out of options...what are we holding onto?

 

Fault the logic of going for it this year, but if the team has decided that, they should really do it. Not go halfway
