I can tell you right now being here in Missouri, that seat is gone. Hell, whispers around here are that if democrats make a strong enough push, Romney could lose Missouri (which would be very unexpected).

The way Romney blinked was wierding me out, yeah I know it's trivial but he is just unlikeable on screen, might be a nice decent dude one on one but on tv he is really akward. No wonder his negatives are so high, he has trouble connecting with folks.

 

That's why I think Obama knows he has it made. The superficial stuff wins elections. Obama knows he's camera friendly and he may be a blah-do-very-little President, but he knows how to deliver one liners with ease and he's a good looking guy. He will give an AWESOME speech at his convention and stress he just needs more time and bam he wins in a landslide.

Add to that that it's very hard to unseat an incumbant, the last two who did it were charismatic candidates with Reagan and Clinton. You need to be likeable and Romney just isn't it. He is the GOP's John Kerry...

Who? Did anyone in this thread start by saying teachers suck and need to shut up? Or did a teacher b**** about their pay first? That's the way this argument always starts.

I brought up higher teaching salaries because the governor of New Jersey had just s*** on teaching unions on national television minutes before my post, and then talked about how we needed better teachers. I never said that I wanted a higher salary(I obviously picked this profession because of the passion I have for helping people not because of the salary). I said that a higher salary = better teachers across the board. Read my post and tell me exactly where I was "b****ing." And then only after someone happened to point out that my life was easy and I only worked 75% of the year is when I brought up the long hours I work during the school year and that my life was not that easy. So not b****ing there either.

 

If Republicans get rid of teaching unions salaries are going to go down everywhere and teachers are going to get s***tier going against exactly what he preached.

 

So no a teacher didn't b**** about their pay first. A republican leader in this country brought it up so I brought it up in the republican thread. All I said is if you raise salaries you'll raise teacher quality. But its become pretty apparent that you know little about education and the profession of teaching so your opinion on this topic is pretty much irrelevant.

 

Any of you against raising teaching salaries have yet to provide a valid argument to why is shouldn't be. Talking about how teaching is easy when you've never taught a day in your life doesn't count.

I don't want to s*** on teachers here, as they are very important. But I'm gonna say this is all an overstatement. Parents are more important than teachers, and your mentality has been bought by the vast majority of the country unfortunately, and that's why our educational system sucks. We demand too much of teachers and when they fail to perform we point the finger at them. It's not the parents fault for not being a parent and teaching their kids the importance of education, it's the teachers fault for not being miracle workers. But no amount of money will provide kids that good parenting, so it's just hard for me to believe that more money=better teachers=better education system. I mean, I had good teachers and I had s***ty teachers. But I had better parents, so regardless of the teacher I learned what I needed to learn because I knew what the end goal was and what I had to get through to get there.

 

You guys just crack me up with this summer time off crap. You have it better than 95% of the people in this country that are working. You have a decent pay, you have a good amount of time off, and you get crazy good benefits. So, stop yo b****in'.

 

Certainly parents play an absolutely tremendously larger role in the formation of a successful youth than teachers. However, the government can't do much to make parents better. What they can do is make an excellent education available to all, giving children the tools to OVERCOME their parents/home if need be. I think we're all for making parents rich and happy and intelligent (might help to educate the parents in their youth too ), but we're a few degrees from legislating to make parents better.

 

Summers off are nice, but perhaps it isn't an apples to apples comparison with other jobs given the nature of the work and the type of skills and education necessary to do the job well.

Normally when I drive through Missouri (I55) I only see Republican signs and Pro-Life signs. Interesting.

Their reason, whether they want to say it or not, is that moving the budget towards other functions is more important than the teacher's salaries. That's okay, but I don't agree with it and I think I know why most don't vocalize it.

 

The problem with paying teachers well is that you don't get an immediate payoff. Really...you're lucky if you live to see education reform really pay off. If you do, you end up not realizing that the successes around you might be strongly influenced by the education provided them so long ago. It's a very thankless thing. The best you can hope for is raised graduation rates and standardized scores, which by no means tell the whole story.

She did the same segment four years ago but it was still hilarious.

Depends who is pointing the finger. Oftentimes it IS the child's fault that he or she doesn't succeed (by extension, perhaps, the parents'). It is not for you or I to decide if the teacher isn't doing an acceptable job, it's the school district's. It should be evident to the school administrators whether teachers are doing a poor job. Good school districts take the tenure process very seriously, my "crappy" local district did some heavy vetting and review to make sure only the deserving received tenure and some just didn't get it (it's hard for kids to understand this since many of our favorite teachers were the bad ones).

It is not for you or I to decide if the teacher isn't doing an acceptable job, it's the school district's.
