So are you saying that there's a good chance that McCain will suddenly drop dead in the next four years? His 96-year-old mother, who has been on the road campaigning for him, sort of suggests otherwise. Geez, even Dick Cheney is still alive and fully-functioning.

I'd have to think that an individual's odds of living another year decrease significantly after the age of 70. His mother living into her 90s is a good sign but it doesn't guarantee anything. Dick Cheney is irrelevant in the conversation.

I'll be honest...I haven't been hearing a lot of talk that Obama shows poor judgment. Experience was his big achilles heal.

You're absolutely right that McCain played the "experience" card and can no longer do so. My argument is that was more important for McCain to distance himself from Bush and attract the blue-collar vote. I believe that he addressed both this morning.

Her and her family are not multi-millionaires, they don't have Ivy League educations, her husband works as a fisherman, they have several children, they hunt, they're not socially liberal, etc. That's a big chunk of the blue collar demographic.

Her husband is an oilfield roughneck. I assume he'll vote for her so that's an increase of at least one.

I would have been livid had he picked Romney or Huckabee. I could have lived with Pawlenty. And the roles were almost reversed. I seem to recall Tim Kaine as very high on the potentail list. Less there than with Sarah, but nary a peep in the negative from anyone here.

Ya know, strange as this sounds, I would have liked Huckabee. He's got a positivistic appeal, like Obama has, and that is something that most of the GOP candidates lacked. Its something that appeals to the masses. And as a Governor, I got the impression he actually was pretty good at compromise with his legislature of both parties. Plus he has executive experience, and was moderate on the environment and energy, which works well with McCain too.

 

Huckabee is not ideal of course - he's got some issues. But I think he would have been more valuable than Romney, or Palin.

Well, I wasn't trying to insult anyone.

Obama only said that Iran isn't as big a threat as the Soviet Union by the way. That ad was less than honest.

You are welcome to think so. I simply disagree. Its irrelevant to me, as well as others who care primarily about the direction of the country, and I think some of the female posters here may see it as mildly offensive.

That's still not a very smart thing to say, especially when Iran is developing nukes, threatening to use them on Israel, and has significant influence on global energy prices. Hence the "judgement" issue.

 

Sarah Palin aside, I'd like to comment on Obama's "experience."

 

While it's not "executive experience" running a Presidential campaign is probably as close as you can get. Running what is essentially a countrywide infrastructure of supporters, raising and handling millions of dollars, having to answer every and any question, and all under the spotlight of the national media for months on end. That's a proving ground if you ask me. And a good test to see if that individual has what it takes to stand up for the country in the international arena.

Making a comparitive statement like that, as a side mention, means little. And besides, I agree with him.

 

The larger issues of judgement, as metered by votes and positions taken on important issues (Iraq, energy, critical incidents, etc.), are what matter to me. I think Obama has generally (though not always) done well with that.

 

There might be something that this pick lacks, and does so in a way that might actually affect something.

 

Latinos are a key swing constituency in this election. Bush picked up over 40% of that vote, and McCain really needs to hold on to that. Unfortunately, his party's actions since 2004 have done a great job of moving the Latino vote more solidly into the Democratic column. McCain might have benefitted most from a pick that could be seen as both friendly to hispanics and the conservative base. That might be a tall order, but I think its really the only way that either VP candidate could really have a lasting effect on the race.
