Wise words! Scouts can say all they want, but your job on the field has the last word. I remember Ozzie saying at the beginning of ST when he saw Alexei for the first time:

 

"Who is this kid from Ethiopia"

 

I knew Alexei has deceiving power and would surprise many.

 

Alexei may be the best 7th hitter in MLB. His numbers are also better than some 4th, 5th and 6th hitters.

You bring up an excellent point that highlights one of the things I really think is unfair in these types of selections. It is usually better to have a no month than a slow month. Voters tend to fill in high the no month and count the slow month. One of the challenges of being a rookie is 162 games. Coming up they would never play that long of a season and will almost always slump.

Sure Alexei has 5 more SB but he's been an absolutely horrid base stealer, if he's going to be 12/21 then I'd rather he not steal bases at all. Longoria is 7/7 by the way. There's an 83 point difference in OPS, 27 point difference in OPS+ (which factors in the fact that Alexei gets to play half his games in the Cell) and Longoria has drawn 30 more walks. Slightly less HR? 6 is slightly less? Longoria is also an elite defensive 3B, while Alexei has been pretty underwhelming at 2B. ALL of Alexei's defensive metrics suck, so you have to give Longoria a huge edge on defense.

 

It's a tie in run production. Alexei takes contact hitting (AVG and avoiding K's) and hitting with RISP. Longoria takes power hitting, patience at the plate, base stealing prowess, defense and Longoria is the better player in close and late situations. And if Longoria is going to be penalized for strikeouts then I feel I must mention Alexei has grounded into 6 more double plays than Evan which tends to happen with contact hitters.

 

VORP rankings for AL Rookie Position Players:

35.0 - Aviles

34.8 - Longoria

20.7 - Span

20.3 - Ramirez

18.0 - C. Davis

 

Aviles also has some crazy ass numbers this season but I won't even bother making an argument for him.

There's one more thing to like about Alexei. I was watching some you tube clip from Cuba and saw he wore #2. Nellie Fox was a great White Sox 2nd baseman who wore #2 .

He wears now number 10. I think he chose number 10 because the greates cuban player post 1959 use to wear that number. He was from Pinar del Rio too and played 3B. His name is Omar Linares. Linares always attracted the atention of scouts every time the cuban national team played internationally.
